Radical Entertainment officially announced Prototype 2, the sequel to the team’s 2009 shape-shifting, open-world action title, during tonight’s VGA 2010 awards show. Prototype 2 will be released in 2012 and will feature a new main character, Sergeant James Heller, as he goes on a quest to kill his maker, Alex Mercer.
A lot of Prototype’s thunder was stolen somewhat thanks to the unfair comparisons people drew between the game and Sucker Punch’s inFamous, which is a shame because tearing through a massive recreation of New York City, running along skyscrapers, and knocking helicopters out of the sky with our mutant fists was a blast.
What will the quest to kill Alex Mercer entail? We'll have to wait to find out. Prototype 2 will be available in 2012.

Hope that the new main isn't such a douche like Mercer was.
Can't wait.

honestly did not see this coming. the first one was a completely mediocre game, and this one looks like the exact same thing, so this will probably suck

Unfair comparison? Since when is it unfair to compare two urban, open-world, anti-hero games that were released at the same time, and sold to the same 18- to 34-year-old demographic of gamers? Jake Gaskill must the same kind of journalist who insisted Fallout 3 was not just Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, with guns. It was.

A new character? Fail.

This game was pretty much spiderman...
But you could kill civilians...

I played this game and inFamous, and you're right, it's not really fair to compare. It feels like, to me, that Prototype was rushed and not a lot of thought went into the storyline. For me, the story is 60% of the game. Gameplay 30%, and graphics the leftover 10%. Prototype at times felt like a button masher due to the ultimate horde of undead, and also throwing around cars and tanks. Yes, it was fun to see what you could pick up, but I felt like the aiming and throwing was a bit clunky. Flying the helicopter was PAINFUL. Seriously. I skipped all the mini-games involving the helicopters. And some of the others, where you had to kill X amount in 3 minutes was just horrid imo. I'm a completionist, and I like to get gold/top achievements in every aspect, and Prototype was just too much of a painful grind to make me want to do them. I gave up eventually, finished the game, feeling unsatisfied with the gameplay and story. Sure, you could blame this on me playing inFamous, as a person who cares more about story and detail than over-the-top abilities. This game does intrigue me, because I would like to kill Alex Mercer for wasting my time with the first game in the series. But other than that, no thank you. I'll gladly wait for inFamous 2 for my sandbox game of the year.

Ya know, I love games with a great story and deep gameplay. But i also love that are retarded;ly fun that let me completely @#$% up everything, like prototype. Sure story wasnt great but it was undeniably fun. Its like how people talk about how crappy games like Earth Defense Force 2017 are, its just supposed to be mindless fun with no reason to really focus on story and the like because in the end, does it really matter? I say, no. I mean it'd be really nice, but in the end it doesn't matter because in the end the game is just supposed to be fun.

I actually preferred Prototype to inFamous just because I could move around without having to ride on train rails. Although it looks like they are fixing it for infamous 2, it definitely made Prototype more free and enjoyable. I am excited to hear about the sequel and I hope that they have a better story this time around, because I don't think I've ever sat through a more clichd and bad story than that of Prototype.

Prototype gets a sequel but Enslaved probably won't. Sad. :(

i hope they focus a bit more on story and character development this time around. i really liked the last game but i couldnt help but feel like every character had no reason to do what they did.

The technical upgrade between inFamous 1 to inFamous 2 in comparison to Prototype 1 to Prototype 2 is almost laughable.
I mean if they thought they had a fight last time, they are surely screwed now. Even though it was just a trailer you could tell the graphics have not changed a bit, while inFamous 2 looks like Uncharted quality.

I liked the first and I never understood the Infamous comparisons. Sad that I'll probably forget about this next year because of TES V and ME 3, then Bioshock Infinite after that.

I wonder if they already have put too much development into the next series already and feel they have to release a Prototype 2. I didn't think that the reception for Prototype was all that good after the hype.

I HATE THIS GAME!

Hmm, can't say I thought I'd be seeing another Prototype.
