This Week's New Releases: Mass Effect 2

It’s looking increasingly likely that the big BioWare reveal this weekend might just be Mass Effect 3 after all. That is, of course, if a listing for the game over at the EA Store is any indication. The listing has since been replaced with a simple “TBD” (presumably until the proper reveal is made tomorrow), however Joystiq snagged a screen grab of the original post.

In addition to revealing the game will release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC for $59.95, the listing also happened to included the following summation of the game’s plot:

“Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.”

I definitely dig the idea of returning to Earth to find it under siege, but I’m a little bummed all of this build up and hype appears to be for a game we’ve known was in development forever. BioWare could be planning to announce two new games tomorrow, but that might be asking too much.

Then again, the past few weeks worth of teases have been pointing to a multiplayer-focused Mass Effect spin-off that doesn't feature Commander Shepard, so maybe a duel reveal isn't so farfetched after all. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out.

Save Mankind? Why only mankind? Is ME3 suddenly Human centric now? I though Mass Effect was about saving the galaxy, not one friggin race.

screw multiplayer thatll just ruin it... stick with what it was no bells and whistles and reasons to not devote 100% of the resources to story and single player experience

I don't get why people are dissing on the thought of multiplayer in Mass Effect, for one very good reason... If Bioware makes it, it'll be awesome. Nuff said.

Assuming all this is true of course. Now with the wording "Civilization's of the Galaxy" specifically, I'm kind of hoping the paragon/renegade system gets upgraded with a factions based value system. Like with Dragon Age, certain actions give you favor with humans but then loose some value with Quarians and so forth. And in turn this factions system would shape the story as the player goes through the game.

Other than that I'm completely psyched for this thing almost to the point of eroticism, now I'm just hoping I can hold on to my save imports from the last two games.

I as well hope it's not true about MP. Some games it adds a little more zing but some just become a disaster. Keep it a SP adventure and screw MP,way to many of the those in the market anyway.

Multiplayer is going to be hard and difficult to pull off.

I mean, to me ME was about the RPG, Decisions and Storyline...

The RPG part pretty much went out the window I guess in ME2 and was replaced by action...

God I wish there wasn't a retarded Level 30 Cap.

Anyway as Excited as I would like to be for ME3, I just...

I didn't have the replay value in ME2 that I did in ME1 and I'm upset about the whole thing.

Most people have been trying to say the ME Multiplayer would be like Call of Duty, which kind of makes a little sense with the different classes and races but really, it wouldn't be the best fit so I don't know.

If I was BioWare though and this wasn't a 'planned leak' I'd be PISSED at EA for this.

Finally, we get to hear squadmate comments on Earth. I'm especially interested in What Tali, Garrus and Legion might have to say.

I think they are ruining it with multiplayer. It was bad enough that they stripped out the RPG elements from the second game but to add multiplayer to the 3rd... I don't know I hope the don't ruin 3 like they did 2. Hopefully it will be more like the first rather than the second.

I would have to say there will be some more DLC since they keep mentioning that Lair Of The Shadow Broker is the first to bridge the gap between 2 & 3, There must be more coming down the line. All the other DLC were more like additions to the regular story. Lair of the Shadow Broker added something very valuable to the game as a whole, what other uses you can put that too probably wont be revealed till ME3 or other bridging DLC.

Either way cant wait to find out what they will include in the upcoming DLC and ME3.

This is the announcement, ObSol33tSNiiPer (or anyone else who might be worried). ME2 was announced February 3, 2009, and came out January 26, 2010. Mass Effect 1 came out November 20, 2007. So, the difference in time between games is 3 months, which is probably due to Bioware expanding like crazy since 2007. And that number is based on Mass Effect 3 making the projected Holidays 2011 mark, which, as their January release of ME2 shows, they would not be averse to delaying past. I would guess a February release if delayed, which would put the exact same amount of time between games.

I wonder whether we are going to get some DLC between now and then, or if the well has run dry on the Cerberus Network.
