The ninth(!) installment in the popular racing series Gran Turismo, Gran Turismo 5, has shipped over 5.5 million copies worldwide, according to Sony. Overall, the entire GT series has sold more than 60 million copies since the launch of the orginal Gran Turismo was released in 1997.
Gran Turismo, with its 1000 licensed cars, real-life tracks, well-worked-out physics and ton of features has essentially defined the racing genre for years, so much so that it makes it all but impossible for anyone to compete on the PlayStation system. Sure, 360 users get Forza, but it's almost like GT 5 is the entire "real racing" genre. Sure, there's a bunch arcade-style drivers, but, for the PS3, there's essentially only one game, and that's likely to continue.
I'm an unapologetic fanboy of the latest Gran Turismo game, but I understand a lot of people don't feel the same way I do. How about you? Are you into the real racing simulator?

I gave up on GT5. I am highly disappointed with the game. 6 years for an unfinished game? Yeah the physics are good, but the fact that you can take a turn at a decent clip and ram in to an adjacent car to stay straight with no penalty irks me. Many things in this game irks me.

Was there any doubt, we GT fans are rabid and loyal, I know I sure am. I love the game a ton and this is good news for Sony and Polyphony. Even if they haven't sold 5.5 million total, they did sell them to the retailers which does mean something. Who cares, this is a great game and the perfect reason to own a PS3. I'm currently at 62% complete in the game, which is obscene considering it's only been 2 weeks and I must play like 8 hours a day, what an addiction, hehe.

Everywhere I look I see 5.5 million sold (that is world wide though if you're only counting state side and europe really really loves this game), where does it say shipped?

heres an idea for a good comparison...
Get actual real world pro lap times for a track like Leguna Seca with a car like BMW M3.
Race on that track with the M3 on GT5 record results, then repeat that with Forza 3 and have a side by side of that.
Then compare lap times with actual data from the real world.
The mario fart vs GT5 comparison was a little insulting, I know donell is a fire starter but come on.
Do it Stephen you know itll be fun

Me too, Unapologetic. My favorite racing expeience ever made. might log more hours playing this game than any other, non racing game, Ive played. Sim fan all the way, but still love my Burnout n NFS.

Like other commenters pointed out, yep this is shipped not sold. More annoying skewing of data by publishers.

I hooked this game up to my friends 47" 1080P LED TV with a Bose surround sound system and my suped up 71 Mustang Mach 1 sounded like a fighter jet going down the track lol I'm loving this game, I can't get enough of it.

I tried GT5 on a Sony Style the other day: 3DTV, driving wheel, sound system and all and finally got what that game is about.
It's definitely not for me nor my budget, but i've never been more immersed into a driving game ever before. Its really about the experience, about knowing what you're doing.
Props to GT for opening my eyes.

time for a comparison between GT5 and Forza 3. The GT5 and Hot Pursuit was nonsense, arcade vs sim, come on. We need a sim vs sim

NPD November proves that G4TV need to do more than regurgitate press releases. GT5 did not even beat the new NFS for that month (5 fewer days however). No way it "sold" 5.5M

I have been loving GT5. I also have Forza 3 which is a very good game, but the racing physics in GT5 are simply unmatched, and the 200 premium cars are AMAZING. The special events in GT5 are also awesome (the kart racing is a BLAST and the AMG training series is awesome).

I was into it until I randomly got the finale and the Veyron (which is not a Premium car and is not fully modeled, although a racing kart is...) after that the game lost the challenge that I was used to by previous GT games. Oh well still a fun game.

I never trust either of these companies when it comes to sales/shipped...all talk.
Nevertheless, Game is great and good to hear their doing well

This game should easily outsell BS like CoD although both genres are a little crowded. With 5 mill already maybe it'll happen. In any case the game isn't really for me, it takes too long to get to the meat of the game and my backlog is too big for a game like this. I'll probably get a copy later on when it nears $30. Gotta keep the collection complete.

could've sworn I read shipped on another sit earlier

This is shipped to retailers, not sold...that number is basically meaningless. G4 needs some fact checkers.

That is great! Although i was not overly impressed (already returned GT5 to gamefly), i am glad that GT fans seem to be happy. The PS3 (as well as the other consoles) needs some solid hits to keep the competition at a high level.

Did we learn nothing from the last set of numbers Sony tossed out (4m moves sold). Every web site had to be updated to read "shipped not sold"
Blue_Vortex
I'm calling it, Grand Turismo 5 sales around 9-14 million total.
