Over 1 Million More People Playing Call of Duty: Black Ops On 360 Than PS3

Activision, Nintendo, and Microsoft were the big winners for November according to the last sales figures provided by research firm NPD Group. Treyarch’s ubiquitous shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops took the top spot for software sales, while the Xbox 360 was the best-selling console for the sixth consecutive month, securing its position as the best-selling console in the U.S.  for 2010.

Total U.S. game sales were up eight percent over last November, coming in at $2.99 billion. Physical retail sales of software, hardware, and accessories hit a record high of $2.95 billion, beating last year’s sales by nearly $30 million.

COD: Black Ops set all kinds of records. It sold 8.4 million units in November, the best ever launch month for a game, and became the seventh best selling game of all time year-to-date despite only being out for a month. The game was also responsible for 25 percent of total software unit sales for the month.

Ubisoft had a solid month as well, thanks to Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, which was the second best seller, and Just Dance 2, which jumped four spots to number 3. Criterion Games’ Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit just edged out Polyphony Digital’s epically awaited Gran Turismo 5 to take the seventh spot, while 2K’s NBA 2K11 dropped dramatically from number one to number nine on the sales chart. Here’s the full top 10 list:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops, Activision Blizzard
  2. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ubisoft
  3. Just Dance 2, Ubisoft
  4. Madden NFL 11, Electronic Arts
  5. Fable III, Microsoft
  6. Donkey Kong Country Returns, Nintendo
  7. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Electronic Arts
  8. Gran Turismo 5, Sony Computer Entertainment
  9. NBA 2K11, Take 2 Interactive
  10. Wii Fit Plus, Nintendo

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sales were up an impressive 68 percent over last year. Thanks in large part to the launch of Kinect. The motion-sensing tech was the best-selling accessory for the month, and 360 accessories in general accounted for 60 percent of accessory dollar sales for November as well. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo's DS was the best-selling system overall, thanks to the limited edition red SKU and the discounted white SKU.

Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2 and Harmonix’s Kinect launch title Dance Central helped music game sales jump 38 percent over last year. Despite this increase, Harmonix’s Rock Band 3 failed to crack the top 10 list for the second straight month.
