Call of Duty Black Ops

A research note released today suggests that stock-holders won't be happy until Activision implements an additional fee for players who wish to participate in any CoD multiplayer modes. According to an analyst, keeping Call of Duty's multiplayer free is "a betrayal of shareholder trust."

Michael Pachter, a Wedbush analyst, suggested that Activision's decision to not charge players an additional fee for multiplayer is "a serious strategic error." Pachter went on to say, "We firmly believe that until the publishers address monetisation of multiplayer, game sales will continue to be challenged by the publishers' altruistic decision to provide significantly more entertainment value per hour than ever in history."

This is a response to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg's promise that Activision would never charge for "out of the box" CoD multiplayer. However, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said he would charge Call of Duty players a subscription service "tomorrow" if he had his way.

The Call of Duty franchise is known for its multiplayer. CoD: Modern Warfare 2 and CoD: Black Ops are among the most popular played games on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Would you continue to play if you had to pay a subscription fee? Pay-to-play didn't work out so well for APB: All Points Bulletin, could this be beginning of CoD's downfall?

WHAT IS THE POINT IN PAYING FOR XBL AND CoD?

the point of xbl is to be able to play your games, that are stable, and free (aside from the cost or the XBL sub.)

I'm already paying to access online multiplayer on the 360. I don't want to pay another monthly fee for each online game I own. It's a waste of revenue to even try it on a single game or franchise, let alone a whole year's worth of releases.

I love COD. It is the only MP I play a majority of the time.

If Activision chose to implement a monthly fee, I would find another game to play for free.

Activision would be making a horrible mistake by making players pay for MP.

Other shooters would benefit, while COD would suffer greatly.

Money is too tight nowadays. Players would go elsewhere.

This is absolute Bullsh-. I'm so tired of Activision pulling sh- like this. The fact that Activision is making us ps3 players wait an extra 1-2 months isn't enough, now they want to take away one of the greatest parts about owning a Ps3- FREE ONLINE. I already pay to have internet in my house, why in Fu- should I not only have to pay so that I can have it on my console, but ALSO to play Call of Duty? This is COMPLETE BS! Exclusivity is really starting to pi- me off- It's a MULTI-PLATFORM GAME- heres an Idea:

Why don't we make the game to the best of its capabilities on each subsequential platform and let THAT decide which console it is best to buy it on instead of sucking Microsofts di-.

Activision is really starting to lose me and I'm beginning to regret having ever bought Black Ops. I love the game but if this timed exclusivity keeps up, I have to pay 15 bucks for a fu-ing MAP PACK- AND this BS about having to pay to play Call of Duty Multiplayer starts up- I'm done with Activision. I'll just move on to better games that give me one price tag instead of 5.

im sort of new to the call of duty franchise if im asked to pay more for a game that i already paid 60 dollars for i would honestly stop playing the game an boycott the franchise it would simply be a poor move on there part just to make a few more dollars in an already declinig economy

Activision's CEO said he would put a subscription fee on CoD tomorrow if he had his way?! I guess Activision doesn't stand for gamers anymore. You know, the people you are supposed to satisfy. The people you are making millions off. But I guess millions of dollars just isn't enough for you

I will not ever pay a monthly subscription outside of the standard xbox live annual fee to play online at all for any first person shooter game. Blizzard may think that because WoW has so many players that fork out every month that every game under their umbrella should follow suit, however they fail to factor in things such as the wide variety of platforms that a game such as Call of Duty releases for and none of those cross over to allow for example an xbox player to enjoy shooting his buddy who bought it for his ps3, where as with a title like World of Warcraft, everyone is playing on computers, and everyone can simply pay a little money or roll a new character on the same server as their friend and start playing together for their monthly 15 dollars. A pay to play or even a 'free to play' with transaction based economy system that has worked for numerous MMOs is simply something that is not likely to work in any incarnation of a FPS game in the near future.

They would see their sales dwindle down faster than ever, there would be Lan parties and people would just stick to single play and then trade in after finishing..and paying for a shooter is just BS any way, you have to pay nearly $60.00 a yr for Live and if you want PS+ you have to pay about the same, so why the hell would any one fork over a fee for a damn shooter. keep console games multiplayer FREE..

For an analyst, his understanding of competitive markets is amazingly incompetent and his understanding of gamers is non-existent. CoD is a good series, but it is not "that" good. The second they start charging a subscription fee for CoD is the second that most gamers will abandon the series for any one of the many options that is just as good as CoD.

Do it, I dare you. Drive everyone away and right into the hands of Respawn Entertainment. Black Ops is breaking sales records like crazy. Why would they risk losing those kinds of sales numbers, when they know their customers hate the idea of a subscription fee? Activision is taking enough risk as it is by betting on the rebuilt Infinity Ward churning out as good a game as the old IW could. Not to mention ordering up a plate of Modern Warfare 3, when a Judge could ultimately decide that the MW brand is owned by West and Zampenella.
