Gran Turismo 5 Racing Wheel Teased

Gran Turismo 5 has been in development since the late 1970s, so you'd think the official racing wheel for the game would already be out on shelves. But it isn't. Thrustmaster today teased its upcoming, force-feedback racing wheel on its website. The T500RS is the official GT5 wheel, and it boasts "HallEffects Accurate Technology" and "16-bit resolution with 65,536 valves on the steering." I don't know what any of that means, but here's a number we all can understand: $500. That's the rumored price of the device, and that's without the optional H-shifter.

So, you can have the ultimate driving experience for a total of $600, give or take, once this device is released. Conversely, you can go on Craigslist and find an actual car for $600 and drive that around. Sure, it won't be a Lamborghini, but on the other hand, you can use it to go get a pint of milk or go to the movies or something.

I'm having a good time with a much cheaper Logitech wheel, but maybe I'll feel the need to pick this up once the official details are revealed at CES this year. What about you guys? Any interest?

The $500 price tag is the US equivalent price in Japan and not the price it will be in the US. For example, the G27, as stated previously, around $300 in the US (new), is $450 US equivalent dollars in Japan.

How do you know you have way too much money on your hands? You pay $500 for a video game accessory! But after hearing great things about the Logitech wheel, I'm seriously considering giving that a try.

Man and i thought that people who got suckered into buying the steel battalion controller monstrosity for $200 were suckers. this takes it to a-whole-nuther-level

    Absolutely absurd.

If you want to dabble in sim racing, get something like a Driving Force GT for less than $100 on the net. If you think you'll get into more, try a G27 (about $300 new, or less if you look). The GT doesn't have a H shifter, or clutch pedal, and is more cheap, but still has great Force feedback, and lots of buttons for customizing. The G27 has much better motors, that are quieter, and more precise, and comes with metal adjustable pedals (with clutch) and 6 speed H shifter. I have both and think both are well worth their money for what you get. Both are also more than enough for entry level sim racing, and can be used competitively on more hardcore realistic racing sims on the PC. $600 is a serious amount for a good FFB wheel, cause there are such great alternatives for less than half. Beyond the Logitech's wheels would be the Porche GT3 wheels (still cheaper, and far nicer looking than the one being previewed and considered fantastic if your willing to spend that much).

Wow - but for those of you who are really into this game it might be worth it. I can't see it myself.

I would be interested, but for $600, I don't think its very likely that I will pick one up.

You are using the Logitech Driving Force GT right Stephen? You know where I could get one fairly on the cheap?

So this is how they plan to pay for six years of development.

ive always wanted a racing wheel but ive never been sure my usage would justify the purchase. i may some day break down and by one more reasonably priced but 600 dollars is just way too much for a peripheral. hell the things cost is almost as much as a launch ps3
