Five Locations We'd Like To See For Next Assassin's Creed

The parallel, sci-fi meets history-rich conspiratorial narrative of Assassin’s Creed is one of my all-time favorites, and while I definitely enjoyed Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and Rome is a stunningly realized setting, the game didn’t push Desmond’s modern-day story forward the way I wished it had, even though the mechanics were clearly in place for it. Still, the game did provide a greater sense of the worldwide reach of the conflicts at play in the series, which is appreciated, and, like any self-respecting Creedie (trademarked), speculating about what setting and time period the franchise will go to next is a constant source of enjoyment.

So we’ve put together a list of five historic settings that we’d love to see for the next Assassin’s Creed game. We limited ourselves to the past for this list, so we might be back soon with our picks for modern day cities too. But we’ll see. For now, power up those Animuses (Animi?), because here we go.

Five Locations We'd Like To See For Assassin's Creed 4

1. 18th Century London

London is one of my favorite cities in the world, so I would love the chance to explore Britain’s capital city circa the 18th century. That would place the story just on the doorstep of the Industrial Revolution, a period of exponential advancements in technology, economics, transportation, politics, and pretty much every facet of society on a world-altering scale. Even before that though, you have the coming together of England and Scotland to form the United Kingdom in 1707, and all of the historical and political implications therein. In addition to providing a compelling backdrop against which to tell yet another historically rich conspiracy tale about the battle between the assassin’s and Templars, the geography and layout of London would fit in perfectly with the parkour-heavy gameplay. Plus two words: chimney sweeps.

2. 1890s Chicago (1893 World Columbian Exposition)/1890s Paris (Exposition Universelle)

I realize that this entry contains two distinct time periods and settings, but I’m lumping them together because they share a common theme: the World’s Fair. I am a huge fan of Erik Larsons’ Devil in the White City, so the idea of being able to freely explore the Chicago World’s Fair (aka the World Columbian Exposition, with the world's first Ferris Wheel. Imagine climbing that thing) and the surrounding city in search of the next piece of Eden is just too amazing for words. Plus, it would bring the AC franchise stateside for the first time (outside of references to American cities in emails hidden in previous games), which would be interesting.

1890s Paris would be equally as compelling because of the presence of the Exposition Universelle, which shared many of the same aesthetics as Chicago’s, and you just know Ubisoft would have a field day coming up with some elaborate hidden treasure stuff surrounding the building of the Eiffel Tower.

3. 1860s Japan (Meiji Restoration)

Similar to the Industrial Revolution in Europe during the 19th century, this period in Japanese history brought with it huge advancements, major governmental shifts, and, most interestingly for the AC universe, the dramatic decline of the samurai, brought on by intense resistance between the samurai and the Japanese army and the government. This could then be used as a way to introduce ninjas into the mix, especially since ninjas had become a sort of secret organization by that time in Japan's history (Order of Assassin's, anyone?) Unprecedented industrialization, strong ideological conflicts, and an incredibly lush and visually distinct environment to explore? Sounds like a winning combination to me.

4. 1500s Constantinople

The establishment and rise of the Ottoman Empire would not only be a stylistically and narratively strong setting, but it would also be a nice way to expand the “empire” themes established in previous games. With a strong central figure like Sultan Suleiman I, who brought about some of the most significant expansions and developments in the empire’s history, and was responsible for sparking its cultural Golden Age (art and AC go hand in hand, as you know), you have that strong historical figure anchor the series is known for. And seeing as a lot of AC developers worked on the Prince of Persia series, giving them the chance to return to a similar setting but with a AC slant would be kind of great.

5. 250–900 AD Central America (Maya Civilization)

Per Stephen “Elaborate Cosmology Fan” Johnson’s suggestion, this is perhaps the most intriguing setting from a narrative perspective because the famous Mayan 2012 disaster prediction plays a major role in the overall AC story, and Desmond’s modern-day adventures just so happens to take place in an increasingly tumultuous 2012 as well, connecting the two time periods more solidly than any previous game. In addition to all of the scientific and religious elements, being able to traverse the elaborate and bafflingly advanced Maya cities would be crazy, especially since you would be able to witness the civilization’s collapse from within, and with an AC-laced spin on it. Plus, there are plenty of temples and underground caves and tunnels to turn into acrobatic playgrounds, which is always welcomed.

Thank you to everyone who has presented their own predictions for the next Assassin's Creed location. There have been some awesome submissions, and I always get a kick out of reading them. So keep them coming!

I'd like to see something with the French Revolution... I feel like that could be a pretty good set piece for an Assassin's Creed game.

I think the idea of the 18th century is perfect. Particularly the period of time between 1756 and 1790. As mentioned above these are the precursor years to the industrial revolution, and also contain some of the most important historical developments of the modern age. The Seven Years War (1756-1763), which pitted an alliance of Prussia and Britain against France and Austria (called by Winston Churchill as the First World War and known in North America as the French and Indian war), the American Revolutionary War from 1775-1783, which escalated into a global conflict, and finally the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon in the 1790s. The Enlightenment also provides the backdrop for an enormous amount of interaction with historical figures. From philosophers like Voltaire and Rousseau, to statesmen like Franklin, Jefferson, and Adams, and even emperors and kings including Frederick II (the Great) of Prussia, Maria Theresa of Austria, George III of England, Louis XV of France, and his son Louis XVI. Three European cities seem to be ideal for the setting: London, Paris, and Vienna. I'm not sure all three would be possible in one game, so if I had to pick one it would be Paris. Paris in this time period is Europe's largest center of diplomacy and culture. Nothing would be cooler than sneaking into Versailles or assassinating someone in an opera house JWB style.

London or Japan. There's not much of a question. London would be a free runner's playground and Japan would serve for a great story considering all the dynasty stuff in China and conflicts between Japan and other Asian countries. Japan would also be amazing because of ninjas and/or samurais. London/Japan for the win

London sounds like the most reasonable place, there is a feel of 'Myst'ical to the place. With all that buildings, the Big Ben, small alleys, dark corner and of course Jack the Ripper. Conan Doyle can be the Da vinci of the third game, using his relationship with Desmond's predecessor to write his famous mystery series.

I don't think that they would do Central America, Constantinople, or Japan.

Central America seems seems like too much of a step backwards.

Constantinople seems too much like the setting of AC1.

Finally, I would love to see Japan but it seems like too far away from the mostly western theme so far.

Chicago is likely but since in Brotherhood it explores the parallels between renaissance Europe and them exploring modern day (actually near future) europe I think Paris or London is more likely though I would love to see them exploring chicago.

I didn't think the Mayan civilization would be the greatest. However, seeing as to how it does tie in well with the whole 2012 thing, it's hard to really find a reason WHY this wouldn't be the absolute first choice for the next game.

    HMMMMMMM......

    - China. Specific dynasty can be discussed. But think traversing Forbidden City in its glory hopping on the roof. Think latest "Chinese" movies from Hero to Golden Flower. Maybe they can push physics just a tad to give us same unreal jumps etc.

    - Japan. Ninjas. Iga and Koga rival clans in 15-16th century. Do I need to say more.

    - Ancient Babylon/Ancient Egypt. Exotic and bold. Might be really fun.

    - Going back to Middle East. Umayyad caliphate split between Cordoba, Baghdad. Not gonna work as most people have no clue about this period or interest in it.

    - Maya. Best choice between Inca and Azteca for South America settings.

K so I've been doing alot of research into some possiblities. I come to the conclusion of France late 18 century aka the French Revolution (1789-1799). It takes time between the American Revolution (1775-1783) and the creation of The United Kindom during the Georgian era (1801) "templar's doing" (or freemasons) and now have moven on to France. This is also happening mid Industrial Revolution. Similar to AC2 most action will happen within France with a boss battle in London. However this is only but exactly half of the game if Ubisoft lives up to this being a trilogy. This scenireo fits the 300 year gap between AC2 like AC1 to AC2 (1190's to 1490's, this would be 1790's)and it fits the casual shift of the templars moving westward. I would like to mention late 18th/early 19th century russia/turks war, Reconquista Spain/Portugal (700-1500), and ancient civilizations of past might work, but would be better suited for spin-off games. Oh I forgot the far east, yes Japan's ninja vs samurai would be a great spin-off. But focusing on the future needs to be a major part of this one. Let a direct sequel of AC3 focus more on London and its neiboring towns like brotherhood did for Rome and bloodlines did from Cyprus. This series timeline is endless and I'm talking about past and present(future for us...maybe).

im pretty sure a lot of these places would never be mostly because the animus revisits d.n.a memory meaning that the only possible locations are in DESMOND MILES family tree i doubt Ezios legacy ended in japan or Asia for that mater certainly not central America. im pretty sure the next game will have new assassins in his blood line but may even revisit ezio and altairs pasts again as hes still needs to find clues to the locations of the other temples. however with the end of assassins creed brotherhood leaving you clueless to whats going on after the apple does its thing id expect to see more Desmond far less animus. just an opinion since i had this really odd feeling a lot of the stuff in this game was almost a test for bring there game mechanic to a modern time(leaving the animus and running around monterigioni, and of course the last level which made it abundantly clear that desmodn's as big of a bad@ss as ezio and altiar ever where)

I have been hoping for London for quite some time. I also wouldn't be opposed to maybe Colonial New England like Philadelphia and see it move throughout the U.S. to the Southern plantations or New Orleans and after seeing the fan art of a Cowboy/Western-style Assassin, I'd be on board.

Assassin's Creed: Bushido - A stand alone DLC for AC3 focusing on Edo/Tokyo during the Meiji Restoration period and decline of the samurai class. Imagine all the awesome ninja tools/weapons at your disposal, and parkour through Tokyo would just be...sick.

C'mon Ubisoft, you might as well just do this, Japan's getting a lot of votes on this board...and it's simply a cool idea in the first place.

Well as cool as it sounds i don't think that they would back track in time at all unless its just one game were you play a little bit in each time and area. One sequence in Egypt another in England. Old London seems like the best location for the next game (cross your fingers).
