This year, video games all across the board were gorgeous. Some details were so gorgeous in certain games that we just had to take a minute and look around. In other games, we were able to sit back and watch a glorious cutscene over and over that continued these immersive stories. It’s always a pretty exciting feeling when you get to cutscenes in a game, because you know something awesome is about to happen. You really have to call these things short films after the craftsmanship that goes into them.
We’ve compiled a list of our favorite ten cutscenes from this year, but there are plenty of others out there. Which ones did you love? Also, consider this your spoiler alert. There's a lot of stuff revealed in these cutscenes, so you might want to read the title first, and hit play later. Now on with the videos!
Taking place on the planet Ulaan, this cutscene shows of the verbal and physical spar between the Queen of Blades and Zeratul. The Protoss Dark Templar was on Ulaan seeking out three fragments of a prophecy that he thought would foretell the demise of his people. That’s when he ran into the Queen of Blades and her hydralisk pets. This cutscene is epic in every way. When Zeratul slices off the hydra’s claw and uses it to slice through its head? Awesome.
Mass Effect 2 was a game all about loyalty and battling emotions as well as battling the Collectors. This cutscene, one of the final ones in the game, shows off Commander Shepard as he and his crew are escaping from the Collector’s ship. Not only are the graphics stunning, but the musical accompaniment is fantastic as well and gives us goose bumps every time we watch it.
Final Fantasy 13
Final Fantasy is known for its beautiful graphics, and while all of XIII pretty much looked like one giant cutscene, this scene in particular is one of the best of the year. It takes place at the beginning of chapter twelve when the gang is returning to Cocoon. The crowd notices Snow’s L’Cie mark, because he’s an idiot, and the action just grows from there. It’s two and a half minutes of nonstop fast paced action that is truly a treat for the eyes.
This cutscene is simply brilliant. It is the true portrayal of Fable III’s humor and it’s done in such a smart way. While it never shows your character, Theresa’s monologue in the background gives you a really good sense of the city of Bowerstone and even a glimmer into the quest you’re about to undertake. Plus, it’s really funny. It’s kind of sad how chickens always get screwed over in videogames though. I’m looking at you, Link.
GOW3 can be described as one giant gore filled epic adventure. But this cutscene from the year’s most gruesome title really is a cut above the rest. As Kratos finishes off Helios not only does he scorn him for lies, but he goes a step further and actually rips his head straight from his body in such a sickening fashion. Other great deaths in God of War 3 included Hephaestus and Helios, so you should check those out too.
Another game this year that looks like one giant cutscene was Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. With memorable characters, a gorgeous backdrop done to perfection and some of the most emotive portrayals we've seen in quite a long time, it’s no surprise one of the game’s cutscenes made it onto our list. This one in particular is hilarious, featuring Pigsy being silly as usual. The reactions of the other two characters are great as well.
After ten years, Bungie’s masterpiece has finally come full circle. Halo: Reach, was not only intensely fun but it also had quite a deep story behind it. In the final cutscene of the game, Noble 6 is faced with unsurpassable odds at the hand of the Covenant. Not only showing the brutality of his death, and then focusing on the plasma blast to his helmet, Cortana details the merits of his sacrifice. It leaves you feeling sad but extremely proud at the same time.
Two hot chicks duking it out on top of an airship?! We’re in. This cutscene portrays Bayonetta, the sexy yet snarky heroine battling against her brainwashed former best friend Jeanne. The cutscene is incredibly fast paced with tons of various fighting styles represented. We have guns, fist fights, transforming into cats and birds...Hell, this cutscene has it all, and it’s great.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II
Sometimes it just feels so good to be bad. This cutscene, featuring the “evil ending” of Force Unleashed 2, has Starkiller about to deal judgment on Darth Vader when his evil clone comes out of nowhere and stabs him to death with a lightsaber. The animation in all of Force Unleashed 2’s cutscenes is spectacular, but the emotion on Starkiller’s face as he realizes he was just being used is something painfully sad.
And there you have it. But what did you love from this year?

When Commander Shepard and his team was running from the Collectors is the best cintamatic cutscene I have ever seen in gaming
A_Schneider1992
should add the Ashes to Ashes trailer from Gears of War 3. GeOW always has a great trailer.
LordPunch
Almost every cutscene in DEADLY PREMONITION puts all of these cutscenes to shame. Especially the death scenes.
hoof_hearted4
i got two that i like, but both were from the end of '09. the opening cinimatic for Demon Souls is very cool. the music is great and so isnt the scene. and the trailer for Dragon Age: Origins (Brave New World by 30 Seconds to Mars trailer) is also quite epic.
daughtryboi1993
i would say the ending to assassins creed brotherhood cause it was just confusing oh and the truth cutscene
KulasDevorn
TFU2 had nice cut scenes and trailers, but the game itself was only 5 hrs and not even close to worth 60 - 80 dollars. I say TFU2 was the biggest rip off of the year.
MasterOfWeed
They forgot the Star War TOR CG trailer that was truly epic and like a movie same with all of the Force Unleashed 2 trailers.

The bad FU 2 scene is really sweet! It would be cool if they had u play as the evil Starkiller in FU 3, it would be so BA
RadioactiveMicrobe
Notice how none of it is call of Duty. I wonder why../sarcasm
CampinCarl218
Um, I gotta say its a tie between Fable 3 and FF XIII. They were both pretty f-ing sweet.
skillsthatkills
every cutscene is great in its own way
Fullmetal_Alchemist1
personally i liked the fable 3 cutscene it was just plain funny as hell and lets face it if hell is funny i hope it would be that freaking funny. just seeing that cutscene makes me really want to play it.
Christ0bell
seriously no rdr??
BONERJAM
Just about every cutscene from God of War 3 was amazing.
ME2 had tons of great cutscenes. I was a little sad when The Collector leader finally regains his own awareness only to be killed very quickly afterward, damn Reapers.
RDR had also had great cutscenes. The final John Marston one was huge for videogames. It was a cutscene that nearly made me cry(I'm sure others felt the same way) and stands(IMO) as one of the greatest scenes in videogame history.

OMG I just noticed the thing in the backround in the reach cutscene looks like the ship the chief was on at the end of halo 3. Reach was the planet he landed on!

The best part of this year is its end

This is a bit of an under-the-radar one because Final Fantasy XIV had one of the worst ever starts in MMO history (or gaming history in general), but the Opening Cutscene for players who choose Gridania as a home nation is absolutely FANTASTIC.
