FarmVille publisher Zynga announced today it has acquired Games with Friends developer Newtoy for an undisclosed amount. The newly minted Zynga with Friends Studio will be headed up by Newtoy co-founders Steve and Paul Bettner.
"The Games With Friends franchise is the best social game experience available on mobile today and we are excited to welcome the Newtoy team to the Zynga family," Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus said in a statement to the press today. "The Zynga With Friends Studio will continue to invent great mobile social game experiences for Zynga users everywhere."
With just 23 employees, Texas-based developer Newtoy has managed to create quite a splash in the mobile gaming world, thanks in large part to its hugely popular Scrabble-inspired Words with Friends, which has been downloaded over 12 million times since its launch last year.
This move signifies Zynga’s desire to continue moving beyond Facebook and making its mark on the mobile game space. Since launching on the iPhone back in June, Zynga’s mega-hit Farmville has been downloaded 7 million times, and Zynga now boasts 10 million active monthly mobile users.
Zynga's latest Facebook title, CityVille, which is a mix of Monopoly and SimCity, launched today as well.
