Codemasters creative lead Stuart Black has been chosen to be the creative director of City Interactive's new UK-based studio, and will oversee the development of a new “story-driven [World War II] shooter,” the Sniper: Ghost Warrior publisher announced today.
“We continue our strategic expansion of resources and capabilities and are excited to have Stuart lead our new product development team,” said City Interactive CEO Marek Tyminski. “Having recently secured licensing agreements with some of the most advanced video game engines currently available, there was an obvious need to smartly implement them and with Stuart’s development experience and vision, we feel we have the right person to do so.”
In the official announcement, Black described his studio’s first project as a WWII shooter that will “emphasize high adventure in a genre that's become bogged down in reverence and historical accuracy.” So I guess we should expect something more akin to Call of Duty: World at War (i.e. zombie Nazis) than Brothers in Arms, but given Black’s previous efforts, I don’t think this is terribly surprising. It’s more surprising that someone would want to make another WWII shooter. Then again, if the game can nail the adventure element, that could be interesting.
Black left Codemasters last month once his role in the development process on the studio’s high-octane shooter Bodycount was completed. We haven’t heard anything regarding Bodycount’s current status, but hopefully that will change in the coming months.
