The hype got started early Sunday morning at NorCal Regionals with the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix tournament. In the winners bracket finals, Team Mad Catz’s Daigo Umehara (Guile) was facing off against Alex Valle (Ryu), and, using tons of hop kicks to get over Ryu’s slides, Daigo was able to take the winners bracket top spot and send Valle to the losers bracket finals. The losers bracket finals match up was Alex Valle (Ryu) against DGV (Ryu). HDR games run best three of five round format, and these guys needed to win two games in order to take the bracket. Alex Valle lost the first two rounds in both games, but then came back spectacularly and took three rounds straight both times.
In the grand finals, it was once again Daigo (Guile) versus Valle (Sagat). Valle took the first round and the second was incredibly close. A well timed tiger-knee uppercut into a throw allowed him to take the second. After that, Daigo went on to quickly win three straight rounds and take the first game.
In the second game of the grand finals, Daigo chose Guile again, but Valle switched it up and went with Ryu. The first round was very close, but again, with a well timed throw and only five seconds left on the clock, Valle took the round. In the fourth round, Valle was up 2-1 but missed a clutch Shoryuken and allowed Daigo to slide kick into him to tie the set at 2-2. In round five of the same set, with two seconds left on the clock, Daigo managed to get in a punch at the last second to win the first game. The next games’ rounds were a bit less intense, and with some well timed jump kicks Daigo was able to come out as the victor, winning $360 and a MadCatz Tournament edition fight stick.
