NorCal Regionals 8 have come and gone, but the fighting game tournament definitely had its share of upsets, narrow knock outs, and exciting moments this weekend. Here’s a breakdown of the highly anticipated SSF4 singles Grand Finals feature BLG Vance "Vangief" Wu and EG Ricky Ortiz. Check after the break for even more analysis!
The match up was Vangief playing as his staple, Zangief, and Ortiz playing as his secondary character, Chun-Li. Ortiz had won his way into the grand finals from the losers bracket, and needed to win two best of three games in order to win. The first round went to Ortiz with a well timed lightning legs move from Chun, who never even got below 75% health. In the second round, Vangief was able to land two pile drivers and take the round as Ortiz got a bit overzealous in the end trying to go for a kill. In the final round Vangief missed two bear hugs that Ortiz was able to back dash out of, and while off balance, Ortiz was able to take the game. The second game happened fast. With neither player landing any ultras, nor Ortiz ever falling that low in either round. He was able to come out the victor of the NorCal Regionals Champion and win $1400 and a MadCatz Tournament Edition stick.
There were some whispers after the tournament was over about how Ortiz was unsportsmanlike by choosing Chun-Li, a counter over Zangief, instead of choosing his staple character Rufus in the match up against Vance. I think it’s nonsense, since this is a tournament with high stakes involved, and you should obviously pick your best match up instead of trying to just appease the masses. Plus, Vance had an opportunity to repick his character as well but chose not to. It’s to Ortiz’s credit that he’s extremely viable with two characters instead of just being amazing at one like Vance is.
