The Magic World Behind LEGO Harry Potter iPad/iPhone »

With the seventh Harry Potter film hitting theaters this weekend, interest in the boy wizard is once again at ridiculous heights. Now, fans of the consoles versions LEGO Harry Potter can take their favorite adolescent magician on the road with the iPad version of the game, available today for the iPad and iPhone.

The folks from TT Games recently came by the office to give us a quick glimpse at the game which maintains the same structure and cut-scenes as the console version with a new presentation to take advantage of the touch-screen mechanic. Here, Harry is moved around the screen by dragging your finger or tapping point-to-point locations across the screen. Spells are cast by tracing individual spell glyphs with your finger, offering a more interactive element to spell-casting than in previous versions. Offensive spells like “Reducto” are cast by swiping your finger toward breakable objects or enemies.

The core of the game is essentially the same – collect studs, break things, make things, and battle your way through the first four years of Harry’s Hogwarts experience. While you won’t be followed around by your friends, tapping Harry once will switch out your party members. The game adopts a more top-down view for easier navigation through the game’s 44 levels. Mostly, these are smaller versions of the console’s basic level designs and share the same basic goals.

Your experience is run out of the Room of Requirements, your central hub from which you can access years and specific levels, as well as purchase bonuses and activate red bricks you’ve discovered along the way. Fans of the console version will no doubt find many of their favorite bonuses intact, ranging from pivotal stud multipliers to more fun spells that’ll enlarge your friends heads or turn them into pumpkins. There is a smattering of broomstick gameplay that works the same as wandering around the world – simply drag your finger wherever you want to fly.

From our brief look, fans of the films, the books and the LEGO franchise will no doubt enjoy this portable, sharp-looking version of the console game. Check back with G4TV.com for more on LEGO Harry Potter and the upcoming LEGO Pirates of the Carribean!
