Gamescom 2010: Call of Duty: Black Ops Hands-On Preview

A title update for Call of Duty: Black Ops has been released for both the 360 and PlayStation 3. A number of live fixes were added to the game yesterday, and a bunch of other issues are still in the hopper. In short: Treyarch says it's working very hard on squashing Black Ops' bugs through both patches and updates.

Here's are the fixes/updates that are on their way:

  • Prevention of Valkyrie rocket exploding upon release under rare conditions
  • Prevention of Gunship failing to give player full control under rare conditions
  • Prevention of a rare issue where a player will get teleported outside the map boundaries under very specific circumstances

And here's what was added/fixed yesterday:

  • Improved matchmaking to find matches significantly faster
  • Improved matchmaking to ensure that players are more effectively matched to games with the best networking conditions
  • Improved host selection to ensure that the best host is always selected in the pre-game lobby
  • Improved party system to ensure that parties don’t get broken apart
  • Disable ability to join Private Match, Combat Training and Theater lobbies when searching for Player Match games
  • Server-side and game-side changes to decrease the amount of failed Film uploads
  • Weekly and Monthly leaderboards will now track all kills, deaths and assists properly (All Time leaderboards were not affected by this)
  • Prevention of Combat Training stats getting crossed with Player Match stats under rare conditions
  • Prevention of temporary loss of functionality when a button was being held down at the point of a disconnect
  • Additional fine-tuning of audio levels and ranges for footsteps and gunfire
  • Additional fine-tuning of audio levels for bomb plants/defuses
  • Additional online security enhancements

Overall, are there ay issues with the game that you've run across? It's been largely bug-free for me, but I've been playing almost all single-player, and nothing stress-tests a game like hours of multiplayer.

    Party system is still broken on the PS3. Leaders lose the party midway through the first match.

    Spawn system is horid even worse then MW2. Can't count the number of times i've had people spawn behind me or I spawn in a group of enemies and immediately get mowed down.

    i hate when someone disconnects the game nd you don't get to keep your match bonus and it counts as a loss. really annoys me

    One thing that I think needs to be fixed is using Hardline pro on sentry gun and SAM turrent crates, to change them into other killstreaks. Hardline pro should only allow players to change what they receive from care packages, and not from Sentry Gun crates and SAM Turret crates, since they're specifically choosing to receive a turret, and not necessarily a 'care package' as such.

    why is it that i my hit indicator goes off for a whole clip in the AK47U and yet the enemy does not die but he kills me with a short 1/4 clip burst on a enfield thats not a headshot???? thats what's grinding my gears

    I hate When im crouched with my back to the map edge somewhere and peeps spawn directly in my line of sight over and over, At least spawn behind me like the enemy does...

    RCXD falls through the map on occasion, I knife people in the face (at close range) pass by them and they will be facing away from me and put a knife into air but i will die, watched in replay theater a few times. probly lag.

    i get this error constantly...

    "unable to connect to host party's address using party session info" i get kicked and hard to rejoin game.

    activision support is run by monkeys. they give you support like "turn your router off/on, does the issue persist?" give me a break.

    I have had a a couple care packages fall through the ground and random enemy spawning behind you and your team is a constant bug for me. but overall im happy with this game :)

    I have this problem where it mixes up information when my friend and I play split screen. Like all my classes get renamed to his and my clan changes to his. Also I have had to remake my emblem several times because the game decides to delete it randomly.

    But you know everything else looks good....

    Except the spawning

    The dynamic spawn system in this game is broken. I've had enemies spawn right next to me while I'm camping in a corner, trying NOT to get blown up or shot immediately upon re-spawn if running and gunning. Pleeeease fix.

    I've run into:

    -Instances where sprinting wouldnt work at the start of a match until I die for the first time, same goes for Claymores, or aiming down the sights.

    -RC-XD falling through the floor after running into the wall of a building.

    -Started a match with someone else emblem on my gun (Admittedly minor, but its still strange)

    -Frequent host drops causing the game to end rather than going to migration, but this typically happens whenever I have a significant lead which means this isnt a server issue, its people being whiny brats about losing.

    -Game hard-freezing while loading a match.

    -A Plaid screen appearing every so often on the lobby menu.

    -Sound effects/music dropping in and out on the create-a-class menu.

    -Game hard-freezing while using the XMB (PS3)

    -Party nearly never transferring with me when I leave lobbies.

    -Being able to hear people's mics on the opposite team occasionally.

    Oh and I could definitely go on.....

    I think they hit on all issues at the moment. I hope to see the improvements with lag. (i.e. ME and enemy face-to-face, shooting each other. I move out the way to recover. Apparently, some shots still hit me and I die).

    I had a hard time keeping a party together and joining games...after that in some of the wager matches it was sooooo laggy it was unplayable...i guess no dedicated servers maybe they'll be able to move over later

    any idea if theyll make the chopper gunner gun have and overheat function? cuz otherwise its almost impossible to destroy. and i ahd them kill me from an angle that they should have been able to. example the chopper was on the otherside of the map and killed me on the side of a building away from the copper and it shouldnt have been able to. maybe i just couldnt see my self right on the kill cam but i still think the chopper gunner is a little over powered since you just need to hold down the trigger and the gun wont over heat.
