Call of Duty Black Ops

Black Ops glitches exist (see the Floating Apple!), so don't let our cavalcade of Call of Duty features fool you that it's a perfect game. It's not; it's incredibly addictive and a blast to play, but CoD is not without its problems. So for once, instead of highlighting the awesome, I'm going to walk us through some nitpicks and problems in my multiplayer sessions. Whether you agree or disagree, I would certainly welcome your thoughts.

Thankfully, Treyarch has responded with a slew of fixes in the Black Ops title update, some of which should address the issues we've had to date...but the rest is just inherent to human behavior.

1. Nobody Shoots Down The F**king Helicopters

The majority of my classes have a Strela-3 on the back. Why? Because there's nothing worse than a Hind or Huey laying waste to your team, and as the title suggests, NO ONE shoots down helicopters. I've played hundreds of games at this point, and I can count on one 3-fingered hand the number of times a teammate shot down a helicopter or even helped shoot one down.

Is it the same logic that keeps a sniper embedded when the enemy is capping a Domination point not to far away? "Someone else will get it. I need to preserve my K/D." Hey, I don't like getting popped in the back either while I'm trying to shoot down a heli, but I'm doing it for the team. Why does this selfish behavior continue exist in CoD BO? Are you guilty of such a sin? Atone!!

2. Jammers Don't Work As Advertised

I play a lot of Domination, as I prefer team-based objective games and playing defensively. As I already mentioned, I shoot down helos, but also I like to use special equipment to aid the team. The Jammer has become a go-to favorite for messing up enemy assaults and keeping key areas safe, with one exception: It doesn't really jam. Yes, it messes up an enemy's minimap and it will mask your unsuppressed fire, and it will nullify C4 and claymores, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on RCXDs, the remote control cars. Shouldn't the point be that if someone drives in a remote-controlled car that it shuts down or goes rogue if it enters a field that's being jammed? What exactly is the jammer "jamming"?

It'd be great to slow down the tide of Hardlined RCXDs, and I was hoping the Jammer would help there...but short of shooting the remote control cars, there's no real way to shut it down. Same should be true of Valkyries. They should either fizzle out or become uncontrollable if they enter that field of influence.

3. What We've Got Here Is A Failure to Communicate

Chatting with your allies is a surefire way to overcome the enemy. Sharing enemy sightings, coordinating flanking maneuvers, or even where you were downed, is a huge boon to intelligence when playing a team game. And knowing is half the battle! Of course, what I've found is that despite 3 million people bouncing around Xbox Live, no one chats outside of pre-set friend or party games (or rogue Kinect mic set-ups).

I'm still the fool calling out "there's 2 on A," but typically the only response is silence. I'll try to warn folks of an attack, and watch them get mowed down or find myself getting nailed in the back because the other two guys that just ate a bullet didn't decide to tell the third guy that was watching their flank. I remember having a fair amount of chat over CoD 4, World at War, and Modern Warfare 2, both constructive and incredibly inflammatory, but at least it was talking. Have things changed that dramatically since the last game to make talking less interesting in the game?

4. "Diabolical Sabotage" AKA The Art of Hiding

Hiding is not a problem inherent to Black Ops; it happens in every MP game, but when a game like BO brings in millions of new players, it just seems a bit more rampant. The problem I'm talking about is "clipping," when players use the environment to mask their characters in the level design; for example, a dark patch where they can crouch near a barrel they normally shouldn't be able to see around or sneaking their way inside a truck, being able to see out while other players can't see in..

To be clear, hiding in the grass with Ghost Pro, totally cool. Hiding against a pipe where you're half-fused with the level, like some sort of Brundlefly douchebag monstrosity: Totally not. It's an abuse of the geography; you've figured out the exact spot that you can game the system, and congrats, you're a dick, but that's just baloney slices. I'm all for clever spots, like going prone on top of snow-covered structures on WMD but taking advantage of clipping is a bit too much.

As mentioned earlier, some clipping issues have been resolved, and other improvements continue to be made (Ninja should work now), but these were some general observations I've made. Are these similar to the experiences you're having? Am I crazy? Am I wrong? What else have you noticed? Do share when you can!

I got a glitch/game design that needs changing.....how about Treyarch fix the damn spawning in multiplayer. It's atrocious and annoying to spawn in the middle of firefights, over, and over, and over again.

Treyarch worked hard to put together a gaming experience with everything in it. I believe the ambition of Treyarch can be seen in the unfinished nearly broken game that was released. All the game modes and extras (Zombies, Wager, Campaign, Dead Ops, Customization, etc.) Treyarch included was a great touch especially with the 60$ price tag. BUT the multi-player feels like something on the PS2. Still fun but regressive from the amazing and ground breaking work that Infinity Ward released in Modern Warfare 2. MW2 had a number of problems/glitches but in terms of a multi-player experience MW2 is far superior to Black Ops. I am almost considering going to buy my copy back I traded-in. This is solely my opinion and in no way is to say that it isn't possible to have more fun playing Black Ops but be honest with yourself when you are getting killed from behind seconds after you spawn on NukeTown... you aren't having very much fun.

For being an article with glitches in the title I fail to see any actual glitches in the article. The title should have been "I'm yet another COD player that wants to complain about other peoples play style".

I usually playing domination with a group of friends (chat). I do notice a lot of people don't have amic even plugged in while playing on their own..

I'm between average and pretty good player, but if you want a 15-20% boost in score depending on how good you are, use Sam Turret, I tend to get 4-5 killstreaks very often (playing domination and only camping if we have 2 points), and having a turret constantly shoot down stuff gives a lot of extra points, meaning fast leveling for sure...

This title is very misleading. Do you know what glitches are Eric? Everything on here is just a complaint about how other people play the game, except for the Radar Jammer. But isn't that what it's for..... jamming RADAR....

I'm sorry I really like G4 but this has to be one of the worst articles ever written. You guys might as well write an article about Reach glitches and tell us how much you don't like armor lock!

And BTW, every single one of my classes is equipped with the Strela-3 and I love to shoot down enemy killstreak rewards.

mw2 killed cod forever, all the 13 year old boys that camp, exploit, mod, and glitch, they killed mw2, now they cam over to black ops (only beacuse it's cod) and they are already making it bad now to, the first week was fine, but now, since they have found the over powered class (lightweight, warlord, marathon+ ak74+supressor)they are just turning it into JOHNNY TRYHARDS CAMP,STAB,INSULT, FEST.

I havnt seen any people hiding partway in the level. But i DO take down helos when they appear, probably cuz i like to stick it to the enemy. Not many people on ps3 shoot down helicopters, which gets really annoying when the enemy will miraculously obtain a heuy from a carepackage.

Some of the higher kill streaks are useless. I'm lucky to get 2 or 3 kills with a cobra and 1 kill with a mortar strike. The valkyrie rockets are way to high, I'm yet to get a single kill with them. I shoot down helis all the time. The first rocket launcher is great, you can free fire at enemies or lock on to aircraft. Range is great, but if the heli isn't near to me, I'm not going out of my way to shoot it down. I feel the sound is an issue. Footsteps and helis are too quiet. I never hear an enemy come up on me until i head the sound of the gun fire that killed me. The dogs and RC cards are a good volume. Matchmaking seems slow. Overall I like the game. I think the kill streaks could be reordered and tweaked a bit, but in this COD version, you really need to earn them. I like the fact that here isn't a chopper gunner and 2 harriers in the air mowing my team down all at once.

Glitches? Yeah right. Sounds like someone is just whining cause he's in bad games. The only one worth complaining about is the jammers.

As for the people not talking thing. Everyone is different and in my case, I hate talking on the mic. Most of the time it's because the people on the other end are quiet, annoying, always whining, talk to much trash, or are in private chat. So, I like many people have converted to not using the mic. I would get rid of the mic, but I have a few family members and close friends who I talk to on Xbox Live in the private chats.

I found that it's alot better to not use the mic and it helps to keep the voices muted. So, for those that complain that people with mics don't listen... keep in mind that if they are like me, they keep the voices muted so they don't have to be annoyed. That way they can play the game in peace. The way they want to. They can just have fun without someone, whining, and be annoying on the mic.

Now as for the glitches, how about the people behind Black Ops get off their asses and fix the glitches. I haven't seen any in multiplayer (least not anything to whine about), but for the single player... oh boy. Playing through veteran for the achievements is a waste of time since the achievements don't unlock! I've seen a friend of mind beat the game on veteran and he got nothing. He did get the other achievements for doing certain things in the previous missions on veteran, but after beating the game he didn't get anything.

Only problem i have is people re spawning RIGHT behind you. You kill an enemy and they kill you within the 2 secs you run away.
And i dunno about you, but its kinda nice not having to plug your mic in in order to not hear a bunch of douche bags yelling over the tv. *you know the ones that complain, spam, etc* Yeah i can mute them, but then i spend a 1 of the game going through the list.
and NO ONE shoots the helis down BECAUSE THERE'S BUILDINGS!! My First reaction when a enemy helicopter is coming isnt "SHOOT IT DOWN!!!" No its "THERES A BUILDING MAE A RUN FOR IT!!!" You gotta remember in MW2 95% of the maps were WIDE open and there was little to no place to hide from choppers......in BO most maps have SOME sort of building you can hunker down in.....Plus I dont carry a rocket with me..no need.

I agree with others about the RCXDs, or as I call them, "Kill Streak Ruiners." I cannot tell you how many times I've been on the verge of a kill streak reward to have one of those stupid cars kill me. And with hardline, you can get one in only 2 kills? Should take at least 3 with hardline and 4 regularly.

Yeah I agree totally with you on number 1. I only have one class that has the strella with it but once the enemy brings out a heli and I die I switch to that class and take it out asap. It seems that very few people give to craps about the fact that its wiping everyone out. But oh well. I'm not content hiding in a building and waiting for it to leave. I rather shoot it down and get 400xp for it also. It only makes sense to shoot it down.

Shooting down Helicopters does work, I do it with my AK74 as much as I can, but someone almost always shoots me in the back or someone else kills me before I get the chance to take it down, but I did do it once and got 50pts for the assist in taking it down. As for the hiding thing, usually when someone kills me while hiding, it's because I didn't look hard enough for the hidden player. As for the communication, I almost always mute everyone because no one has anything interesting to say ever and I never want to listen. Of course I can't say anything back because I crushed my bluetooth headset because it wasn't working right. I'm never sure if anyone even hears me anyway. Of course these observations were only made over 8 hours of play during a rental of this game on the PSN. I love the second chance death perk and when I kill one or more players while about to die, hehehe!

Ummm...I couldn't agree less with complaints number 3 and 4.

With regard to 3, I have no interest in talking to anyone online, in fact I think the default setting should be to have all that microphone chatter turned off. I shouldn't have to go through the player menu each time I start up a multiplayer game to mute everybody. Most people have nothing productive to say, just a bunch of mumbling, odd noises, and swearing.

With regard to 4, looking like you are part of a pipe is called camouflage!!!! That's why your character wears that kinda multicolored stuff that looks like leaves, so you can blend in! It doesn't matter the object, blending in is the name of the game! WTF?!!!!!

I can agree with you totally about helicopters and less RC cars though.

I agree with this article most of the problems are with the humans. One problem I have is with sniping. The maps are great, if you use close range weapons. Unlike MW2 none of the maps have real long sight-lines so you can't snipe.
