Over the weekend, I tried out a racing wheel peripheral we had here at the office, and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. It was the first one I’ve ever really tried out outside of an arcade, so I don’t really have anything to compare it to, but it did get me thinking about racing games and racing game peripherals. And since Criterion Games’ fantastic Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit hits shelves today I figured now would be as good a time as any to find out just how popular wheel controllers are among devoted racing game fans.
How many of you use wheel peripherals on a regular basis to play racing games? Which ones do you prefer? Are you better with the wheel or a standard controller? Are there any particular games that you’d rather play using a wheel?

Best wheel to get is the Logitech G25 which has a clutch pedal and sequential 6 speed gear box. It does not work on the Xbox which sucks, but works great for gran turismo games and dirt 2 on ps3. I built a table just for it. Its kinda pricey but its worth it.

I've never had a wheel for any of my driving games. I guess my biggest issue with them is where do you set them up in order to use them? I don't know anyone who has a full size driving rig to give you the correct proportions/distances between the wheel and the petals.
Do the people have them just use them on a coffee table? Do the wheels give you the same resistance in order to judge how deep/sharp your turns should be?

I haven't owned my own driving wheel peripheral since the original xbox, but i wouldn't mind owning one. I used to enjoy playing Driver 3 on the Xbox with the driving wheel which was A LOT of fun. Although it seems that Microsoft is saying that the Kinect will be able to read the motion of hands for steering and shifting, so it'l be interesting to see how well that works out.

I plan on getting a Driving Force GT when i pick up GT5. I have never bought a wheel before, but i've had every Gran Turismo game and have always wanted one. That Indianapolis Motor Speedway GT5 demo that came out a while ago pretty much sealed the deal: time to get a wheel.

I like wheels for sims (have that awesome wheel Logitech released with GT4), I tend to prefer a control pad for console 'arcade' racers.

I only care for them in simulators like GT5, not so much in NFS titles. Although they are super crazy if you want a good one, so I have not gotten my hands on one in a while.

Just picked up the Mad Catz Wheel. Love it with the exception that the peddle needs to be on hard floor and slides on carpet. Had a hard time with the NFS Demo because the game is so fast but I think ill adjust. Playing Forza 3 with it is the only way to go.
