The HP Envy 14 Series Laptop sports an Intel iSeries Processor, ATI HD 5650 graphics and up to 8 GB of RAM, making it perfect for gamers on the go. Kevin Pereira and Chris Hardwick take a look at the super thin laptop, which retails starting at $1,000.

What You Need to Know

  • It’s twice as heavy as a MacBook Air at about 5 lbs.
  • The laptop is also twice as thick, but it's still relatively thin.
  • It features two USB ports, HDMI out, an SD card slot, and a built-in DVD burner.
  • It also has a full size, backlit keyboard and a multi-touch trackpad.
  • The backlit keyboard feels great to type on; the keys are widely spaced and it's immediately easy to use.
  • The track-pad is only okay; the mouse clicks and pad are all one piece, which makes it tough to move and click at the same time.
  • It also supports pinch and zoom, rotate, and three-finger swipe, but it's not the best we've seen.
  • The LED screen is vibrant and great for watching HD video, though it does have a little glare.
  • The Beats speakers are loud and clear, but they are lacking a little in the bass category.
  • The one thing it does have that the MacBook Air doesn't is much faster components (like the processor and graphics).
  • Our gaming benchmarks from 3DMark Vantage scored pretty high for an affordable laptop of this size.
  • Games like Call of Duty: Black Ops run surprisingly smoothly and we are confident it'll play most new games with ease.
  • Normal booting to Windows takes about a minute, but HP has an instant boot feature that lets you surf the web or check e-mail, and it only takes about 10 seconds.

Price

  • These laptops start at $1,000, but the machine we have is $1,400.
  • Even though there are a few design hiccups, the performance is amazing, even at $1,000.
