Gamescom 2010: Call of Duty: Black Ops Hands-On Preview

Activision has proclaimed Call of Duty: Black Ops  the biggest entertainment launch in history. According to the company, initial Black Ops sales beat those Modern Warfare 2. First day sales in the US and UK totaled more than $360 million.

Black Ops sold around 5.6 million copies in North America and England, where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold a piddly, 4.7 million copies last year.

As you'd probably expect, Activision is happy about these sales figures. Bobby Kotick said, “There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year’s five-day global sales record of $550 million." I heard he was lighting a cigar with a hundred dollar bill while he said it, too.

Were you one of the million who picked this game up on its opening couple days of release?

I like what Treyarch does with the COD franchise.

Yes, Black Ops is not as pretty as MW2, but the gameplay is better balanced and more enjoyable.

From my experience with COD, Treyarch COD players work together more than on IW COD. Weapons on Treyarch are more accessible than on IW. On IW COD, I find myself disregarding a majority of the weapons, because they are not very effective.

I liked WAW over MW1. I like Black Ops over MW2. Substance beats flash and spectacle very time.

    Seeya on the battlefield!

Oooohh.. . impressive sales figures. I'd love to see how many get returned or traded in by the end of the month. :P

And I'm not hating on COD or Activision, just Treyarch. Didn't like WAW and it's not that hard to ride the coat tails of Infinity Ward, scan all the message boards of complaining gamers, and tweak everything under the sun to try and make everyone happy. It's all shiny and new now but when you try to make everyone happy, eventually you'll make no one happy. In game terms that translates to longevity. I'll stick with MW2 thank you very much.

Black Ops is quite possible the worst game i have ever played. Congrats Treyarch. In multiplayer did you guys just use the same noises you used in WaW? Its awful. It sounds like I'm playing a game on super nintendo. I'm actually returning my game. Already done. Back to IW for me. Please shut your business down. Please dont make anymore games. Cheers.

@XXXSpartan118XXX so you're telling me you haven't owned a Madden game or any sports game for that matter that has "roster updates" every year and you still shell out $60 a pop...c'mon the DLC argument is not vaild considering there are completely different from previous CoD titles...theatre mode, an economy system, contracts, customizations, split screen guests, combat training, more extensive zombie modes...with all of that the DLC would cost you $60 bucks anyways

In terms of $$, it may have been the biggest but Halo 3 was definitely the biggest ever. Look at the marketing and promotions and such for that game, nothing will ever come close.

To the idiot that said 3.5 million were playing COD last night on Live it was actually 2.5 million. This game is exactly MW2. witht he changes they made it could've been DLC instead. Paying $60 every year for a COD is bull. Maybe if a COD came out every 2 years instead of every year we'd see a better game. I want my moneys worth not play COD4 then the nect year have WAW then MW2 after and now Black OP's. They want your money not your concern.

    @Evil Shenanigans

By your logic, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus are the best musicians of all time. Also, American Idol and CSI are the best shows in the history of television, and Avatar is better than Goodfellas or the Godfather.

I bet if the next game was called: Call of Duty: You're all sheep and will buy this regardless of title
It would probably sell more than copies in its first day than every other game in existence over their entire lifetime.

I don't see how a game that's pretty much the same every year sells so well

I like Black Ops a lot more than MW 2, as long as Activision can keep this kind of quality (for the xbox at least) than I'll gladly shell out the cash.

Call of Duty has gotten stale for me. I played Call of Duty 4 a ridiculous amount. And I loved it. Then World at War was awesome, but I started to get bored of it. Then Modern Warfare 2 was fun, but I got bored of it. I'm not going to get this game, at least not for awhile, because I'm just tired of Call of Duty. They need to give us a few years between games if they're just going to add more polygons and put it in a different setting. Don't get me wrong, I love polygons and new maps. I just think I'd rather get the new Donkey Kong or the new God of War (Ghost of Sparta) or a bunch of other games before I get Black Ops.

Over 3.5 million were on Xbox Live last night. I think that if the Cod games sucked there wouldn't be so many people buying them. To those of you who say that Black Ops is the same game I do not pay you any mind because you obviously haven't played it, therefore you are uninformed, and therefore you are ignorant on the topic and your opinion carries no weight.
