There are currently over 2.8 million people playing Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC at this very moment, just 16 hours since Treyarch's much anticipated title (legally) hit shelves. Tuesday is still a school day, correct?
More interestingly though is the fact that there are almost 1.5 million more 360 players online than PS3, and over 1.4 million more than PS3 and PC combined.
The official tally looks something like this: 2,156,469 on Xbox 360, 664,982 on PS3, and just 55,071 on PC. Consulting my hallway-length abacus, I see that that is a difference of 1,491,487 for 360 vs. PS3, 2,101,398 for 360 vs. PC, and 1,436,416 for 360 vs. PS3/PC.
I’m sure we’ll be hearing some kind of official statement from Activision later in the week regarding Black Ops’ launch day sales. Of course, those figures won’t include a breakdown of how many sold on each platform, but if I had to guess, I would say that the percentage difference in the number of online players between the two consoles is probably pretty close to the percentage of 360 copies sold versus PS3 copies (i.e. around 3x as many for 360 vs. PS3).
Just for fun, I popped in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for 360, and there are currently 11,275 devoted players online. I’m going to jump on Modern Warfare 2 later tonight and compare those figures to Black Ops as well, so check back tomorrow for those figures.

This article is totally invalid, as Treyarch has admitted that the ONLINE count when this article was posted was WRONG. Not only that, but saying that there are WAY more 360s out there is invalid. 42 million PS3s compared to 44 million 360s, and that even includes all the people who just went and bought new ones when their's RRODed. Yes, PS3 owners are less likely to buy this game because more PS3 owners are Asian, African, Australian, European, and Central and South American than from the US. That's because they don't buy crap equiptment and SCEI doesn't target the US market as much because it's just not as profitable for them as the rest of the world. And the Xbox 360 thing at the end of the commercial is because Microsoft PAID them to put it there. If you look online, they have a co-operative marketing agreement. Just like Sony and EA, if you realized, PS3 gets exclusives of stuff like Medal of Honor beta was 1 week early for PS3 and PS3 owners all got a copy of MoH that included a copy of MoH: Frontline on the disc. Also PS3 got exclusive RB3 Demo. And at E3 last year at press conferences, if you paid attention: Activision only used 360s for their presentations while EA only used PS3s. Keep up with the marketing ploys guys!

Someone probably mentioned this already:
The PC numbers are only that low because of a large percentage of users who can't play due to a severe lag problem that needs a patch to be fixed. Also, the main provider of dedicated servers, GameServers, has said that it is experiencing a higher-than-expected demand for servers, which to temporarily fix this, the limited the number of servers they have online.

Im on ps3... honestly, im a ps3 and pc gamer, but why does there always have to be a fight between xbox 360 and ps3 and everyone bashing pc and ps3? just stop already and play the fken game and have fun

in my opinion, i think the only reason there ar emore 360's out there than ps3's is because of that period when ps3's were sold out everywhere and it took to much effort to find and buy one. where as the 360s were still in stock in mass quantities.

I get it, I have all the consoles and if were to buy this game i would get it for the xbox since i have way to many 1st party games coming out in the the first two months of next year i don't c myself playing anything else on my ps3 other than LBP2 KZ3 and GT5.

I am a PC Gamer who bought Black Ops at Midnight at Best Buy, and participated in a tournament that night, getting completely whipped on the XBOX 360 version, which I never play. Cool that the game has as many players as it does. But this game is far from perfect. Too many glitches going on in the campaine. I hope that a patch comes out soon. Problems ocurring - Prone doesn't work most of the time, WIll stand up as soon I do go prone, A.I. greatly impacts movement when standing near you or over you. Died numerous time due to AI making me unable to move.

I love the fanboy show downs always good for a laugh or two. I own both and they both have their pros and cons. But after MW2 I will never buy a FPS on day one again. I going to skip black ops because GT5 is right around the cornor. I'll get black ops when its $20 used.

The PS3 fanboys care, that's wht their all here. They're upset that their free online service hasn't delivered and they didn't believe the 360 install base was as big as it is, but now they have to deal with the facts from the multiplatform publisher.

Is anyone surprised? I've always enjoyed both consoles and i do sway towards PS3 most of the time, but i've always felt it has a much more diverse community people play Home(i don't know why) and many different kinds of games but on 360 you see alot more people playing multiplayer games(no shocker when you pay for it) I don't think anyone was really surprised at these numbers. And theres also more 360's out there so, It will sell well on ps3 but 360 will sell better. PC i have no idea.
