The Microsoft Kinect may be eavesdropping on you, listening to your most intimate, personal conversations without you even knowing about it. If you're not careful, Kinect will broadcast audio from your home to anyone who's playing video games with you.
Our editorial director Eric Eckstein was playing an online first-person shooter last night, and overheard both sides of a teammate's conversation with his wife. The guy was totally unaware that his conversation was being broadcast, and both he and his wife were clearly heard.
The problem is this: When you initially set up the Kinect, it asks you whether you want to use Kinect to chat, and if you say "yes," "on" becomes the default setting for Kinect's microphone. This lets you use Kinect to communicate in non-Kinect game (so no more headset) but if you're playing a multiplayer game, your Kinect's mic will be on, and unlike a headset, the Kinect will be picking up audio from the entire room.
So this is a word of warning: If you don't want your multiplayer friends hearing every detail of your life while you're online, be aware of the Kinect's microphone settings, and mute it if you have to. There is an upside to the situation. I expect YouTube to be flooded with hilarious, overheard conversations very soon.

@ sy_cred,
Seriously, was that english? Where do people learn how to write a sentence. Our schools really are failing.

Online games need to be updated to use one button to activate/deactivate voice chat. And then make it so a audio icon appears on screen while it's on

This may sound crazy but...turn kinect completely off if not playing a kinect game or kinect app!!
Wow! Whew!That was hard

it asks you if you wants to enable the kinect for chat, you cannot turn it off pretty easy, I am not really sure why you would use it though because you cannot hear what the other people are saying.
cheesypoofs
you just turn off the mic in the options... geniuses

yeah my friend has kinect and we were playing this weekend i could hear everything going on in his house pretty much..

Does Kinect have an indicator light telling you this? This is why the PSeye (which also has microphone chat) has a blue light that tells you its on standby and a red light when its broadcasting so its fairly hard to miss it being on.

That's find most of the stuff I'm saying right now is just how cheap they are and how much I hate the update still. Plus I think they already am. Some of what would be good for the game theories somehow pop-up in some games, but still not my others. I got nothing to hide yet hahaha.

yeah! like facebook before it, another way to tear down the ideals of personal privacy and desensitize everyone to publicly broadcasting their lives! (not really, but really)
