EA Cuts Losses To $201 Million, FIFA 11 Sells 8 Million Units

Electronic Arts managed to cut its net losses for Q2 2011 to $201 million, down from $391 million for the same period last year, thanks to strong sales of FIFA 11 and an explosive rise in digital content sales, the company revealed in its latest financial report.

FIFA 11 performed extremely well, selling over 8 million units worldwide since its launch last month. Medal of Honor has sold over two million units in its first month of sale. Digital revenue increased by 20 percent to $166 million versus last year, and comprised 19 percent of EA’s total revenue for the quarter. EA also saw DLC revenue jump 200 percent over last year as well.

Net revenue was down 32 percent in North America, however, EA saw slight gains in console revenues, with the PlayStation 3 revenues up seven percent, accounting for 34 percent of EA’s total console revenue. Thirty percent of the quarter’s sales came from the Xbox 360, even though 360 revenues were only up one percent over last year. However, the Wii and Nintendo DS took the biggest hits, with revenues dropping 82 percent and 64 percent, respectively.

One of the biggest shocks to come out of the report was EA’s announcement that it has canceled production on NBA Elite 11. No details were shared regarding the decision, however the franchise will now be under the direction of Madden developer Tiburon.
