Minecraft Ghasts

Fellow Minecraft players: The promised Halloween update to the greatest indie game about finding ore and fighting skeletons is live. All you need to do to get it is start up Minecraft while connected to the internet -- the update will automatically install. If you haven't played Minecraft, download it here.

The biggest addition to the game is the new plane of existence, The Slip. It's a hell-like world you enter after building and stepping through an obsidian doorway. Along with fires and new monsters, The Slip also allows fast travel in the "real" world.

For more peace-oriented players, the update adds biomemes (basically, climate areas) as well as pumpkins, fish, watches, new block types and more.

Open question: Who here has been playing Minecraft, and what do you guys think of the update?

Well the update COMPLETELY DESTROYED multiplayer, filling it with so many bugs that it is all but unplayable. At least 2 memory leak bugs eating up resources that hammer the server until it crashes. Other than making the game unplayable, this update pretty much sucked.

I also got no less than 2 JavaScript errors while trying to submit this comment in Firefox.

Does no one debug code anymore?

Also in IE8. That's the 2 major browsers out of the picture. You must not want comments on your posts.

It's what I expected mostly. Though when he said the blocks had a purpose I thought he meant, stuff like craftables. But what they actually do leaves room for so so much more. I'm building firewalls, surrounded by slow sand all around my base now. Also, the AI has been updated. Some things are rather good, and it shows he much soon be adding towns and villages, the pigmen, will flee into your base at the sign of a ghast. It's quite entertaining to watch. I can get chased by ghasts, and lead a whole herd of pig men, to their doom in my traps. I can't wait until he adds more blocks. Once it gets on par with the normal world, and we have special ores and such, it will be amazing. The bugs were a little annoying at first, but he fixed them in like a few hours, so no problems really there. Watch is a nice thing, really helpful if you live underground.

I really wish I could get to that darn hell dimension... Unfortunately the only time i've ever gotten diamonds, i was attacked by a horde of creatures before I could get to the surface...

I haven't gotten to the slip yet, but I like all the new biomes. I tried to start a new world, though, and it was much harder to find coal than it normally was. I haven't had any torches go out, but that is totally going to suck. Unless Notch decided not to do that.

It's not the Slip anymore, that was a placeholder. For now it's the Nether and that is still not even final. After an emergency bug fix on Sunday the game is playable again. The whole "fast travel" part is....well when you first return to the normal world, it will spit you out in a new portal spawned any where from 20 to 500 block away from your original, created one. After that both portals will take you to the same Nether portal, but you will always exit the second, spawned one, making them pretty much one-way. Kinda. Otherwise, the update (after desperately needed fix) is a blast. New mobs and blocks are a welcome addition, and my favorite thing has to be the fishing rod. While using it to fish is nothing to write home about, you can "catch" mobs and monsters, and then yank them. The further you are from them, the greater the force. My new favorite activity is standing atop a narrow tower, hooking monsters, and yanking them up into the air, switching to my sword, smaking them all the way back down and watching them die from fall damage.

To anyone struggling against the ghasts, you can reflect their fireballs/bombs with a well timed smack from anything, inculding a fired arrow.
