How's this for a pitch from left field: An MMO based around the monsters from Universal horror movies of the 1930s and 40s. Peculiar idea, huh? But it's happening. Developer See Virtual Worlds and Universal Pictures are teaming up to create Universal Monsters, a section of the Entropia Universe MMO that brings classic, square-head Frankenstein, Wolfman, The Mummy, Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and other monsters of the past up-to-date. You will play as Van Helsing and track down the well-known villains in their terrible lairs.
"Partnering with Universal allows us to revive the horror genre for the 21st century by introducing timeless film franchise characters into an interactive platform,” said Martin Biallas, CEO of SEE Virtual Worlds. “Fans of Van Helsing and the classic Universal Monsters will be delighted with the extent to which they can interact in the deep, immersive social gameplay of the Universal Monsters virtual world when it launches next year.”
Universal Monsters will join Planet Michael Jackson as one of many "planets" in Entropia Universe that are based on popular entertainment franchises. Both Jackson and his monstrous pals are scheduled for release by the end of this year, and the entire deal is planned as a free-to-play MMO based around micro-transactions. If you want to check out Entropia Universe, it's running right now, with two more generic planets.
I'm a big enough fan of old-school horror to be curious about this, but I fear a campy treatment as opposed to a proper updating that the beloved-but-threadbare Universal monsters deserve.
