Want to show the world just how much you love your PlayStation 3 and all of its various services and features? Well, thanks to Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s new PlayStation Rewards program, you’ll be able to demonstrate your brand loyalty, and earn…well, rewards, for doing so.
“PlayStation’s most important asset is its loyal fans and PlayStation Rewards gives us an opportunity to show our appreciation for their amazing passion and desire to continually evolve the gaming world,” PlayStation Network senior director Susan Panico said in a statement. “We can’t thank our fans enough for the feedback they have given us over the years and look forward to even more dialog to help us evolve PlayStation Rewards to make it the best possible loyalty program it can be.”
There will be three Reward membership levels—Select, Pro, and Legendary—and everything you do (playing games, buying content on the PlayStation Store, taking surveys, etc.) will earn you points, and eventually level you up. As you level up, you’ll become eligible for prizes like avatar items, PlayStation Home content, and chances to participate in giveaways. The first big prize will be an all expense paid trip to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
PlayStation Rewards will start out as an invitation-only beta on the PlayStation 3 sometime soon, and will become publically available in Spring 2011 when it will be expanded to both PS3 and PlayStation Portable.
As I was reading about this announcement, I couldn't help thinking about Jesse Schell's "Outside the Box" presentation from DICE 2010 in which he talked about the inevitability of having everything we do turned into some kind of points-based game. Creepy.
