If you've been holding off on firing up Champions Online, soon, it will be the time. The game is changing its payment structure at the beginning of 2011. While they'll keep the subscriptions as "gold" level account, you'll also be able to play Champions as a silver member, enjoying some aspects of the game, but not having total control over what powers your super-hero avatar enjoys. Silver surfers will also be limited in terms of their inventory, bank and marketplace space. Both silver and gold members (gold member!) will be able to enjoy all the game's maps and areas.
While it used to see that an MMO going free-to-play was the step right before "closing forever," that isn't really the case. Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online have both successfully navigated the switch from pure subscription model to a more hybrid approach, and both those games are thriving. Let's hope for the same for Champions, which is a very worthwhile addition to the sub genre of MMOs that don't feature elves and wizards. I think you should download and play Champions for a bit. Now that it's silver, what do you have to lose?
