It hasn't exactly been a well-kept secret, but this morning it's official: Valve is releasing Dota 2. It's coming from Icefrog, the man behind "Defense of the Ancients," the original Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos map/mod that defined that game for many players.
Gameplay wise, Dota 2 will follow the pattern set by Dota, mixing action gaming with RTS elements to provide epic battles, but the stand-out addition to the game will be in the matchmaking, tutorials and the community.
As anyone who played Dota can attest, it's not a good game to be new at -- it's a hardcore game with a steep learning curve, and being a newb will get you killed. Along with the obvious improvements to the matchmaking system, Valve will try to make Dota 2 a bit more user-friendly by building in a mentoring system where more experienced players can coach newer players, and receive in-game rewards for being a good teacher. All kinds of community involvement will be rewarded, including writing strategy guides and participating in online discussions. Valve promises to build and serve the Dota 2 community in the same way they have built the fanbase for Team Fortress 2.

I dont care about hl or cs, dota is were it is at, i love raging hl and cs idiots haha, i hope value never releases either of those games.

This is so funny reading all the butthurt Half Life fans cry about this not being Ep3, CS2, etc...LOL at you for not being versatile in your gaming choices, I cannot wait for DotA 2, but I think I can wait for Ep3!

the online action RTS seems to be getting very stacked HoN is to extream league ranked is a nice balance of balanced champs with decent people

League of Legends will probably still be better because of its f2p model, large community and constant updates

First off, to the people calling for HL3: technically the Half Life 2 episodes are supposed to be HL3. Secondly, I always assumed that League of Legends was supposed to be DOTA 2.

why does everyone keep calling it HL3? its episode 3. they need to finish the story arc of 2 (which would be ep3), before they can go onto HL3. thats how numbers work.

I have to admit to liking DOTA style games, though the communities, often rife with the disciples of Sirlin, can turn the game to a steaming pile in no time flat. Hopefully that won't happen here, but it probably will. Be interested to see their implementation of it, No specifics on the cost or release date I presume...How could I even ask, this is valve we're talking about.
