Plastic block based MMO Lego Universe is opening for business a bit early. The actual release of the game is October 26, but, if you pre-ordered through "Lego sales channels," you get in two weeks early.  That means beta testers, focus group members, and others involved in the Lego fan world can play in Universe right now.

Launch celebrations will take place at Lego Stores and theme parks over the coming weekend.

As for the game itself, check out the cinematic trailer below:

Impressive, right? But I don't know, something about it seems very "traditional-MMO." I'm sure the regular MMO play is fun, but the power of Legos is in the building, which is why I'm most looking forward to the build-anything mode the game will offer... of course, I could just keep playing Minecraft.

Stick with Minecraft. The building part of LU isn't terrible, but last i checked, ( a few weeks back) it suffers from some pretty significant annoyances. It basically takes the building tools from the Lego website and puts them into the game, but with the addition of whole-cloth model pieces (that don't fit together very easily) and the hassle of collecting (i have 2000 different pieces, but i can't make a friggin wall because only 6 of them are plain old bricks) or buying every piece you want to use. The inventory management tools are practically nonexistant, which makes free building a HUGE pain in the ass.

The game itself is fun and friendly to kids and casual players. It should probably go without saying that hard-core MMO players won't be impressed.
