Well the cat's out of the bag. We now know that the Nintendo 3DS will be out in March of 2011 and will most likely cost around 300 bucks. While there's no official announcement from Nintendo about the exact date or a solid price point, these things can be determined from the little information we have already. Is that an acceptable launch window/price? Will you be picking one up on day one? Or do you expect there to be a newer, better version of the 3DS every year, like the old DS? Check out what Adam has to say on the subject and let us know what you think.

It won't cost $300! Gaming news websites all assume that but it's not true! In the past Nintendo has converted thousands (Yen) to hundreds (U.S $). The DSi was 18,000 yen in Japan and $180 here. This has been true for every DS console so far. Nintendo also likes to keep their products cheap. Expect it to cost $250.

Im not gettin it until the price drops lol I wont get my 9yr old a psp cos it's 169 and he has destroyed every "kid" handheld system he has had like the didg or whatever he broke 1 ds already my 3 year old's is still working cant explain that tho......

I'll definitely get the 3DS but probably won't be until summer.
Also I remember when I first got the original DS I kept thinking how they were going to release another version with a brighter screen and more compact, and I came to the decision to hold off until they released something completely new (the DSi had me sold). Now about 6 years into the future here I am happy with my decision and eagerly waiting for the release of the 3DS.

Thank god Adam is back. They were running around like chickens with they're heads cut off around here while he was gone. Oh, and... 300 for the 3DS?! Ridiculous.
Ashley_Si
they are trying to compete with apple now, so somebody tell me, iPhone/Pad, how much are those again, and how much less are you getting? iPad is a better comparison without the 3G

...never much got into hand helds...could care less about this but I wish I could think of the next level of evolution for programming after the 3DS so that I could profit from it...Hail Caesar

I had planned on buying one just for Zelda 3D but no way dude, not a three hundred bucks!

that is a lot of money... but il probably get one either way... I find it kind of funny that they're making a portable device more expensive than thier home console though...

If you ask me, the real crime is how little of this money will go to the people who designed this device. The majority of the profits will go to a company which simply acts as a big vat of money.
Anyways on a relevant note, the technology certainly seems to be worth the steep price. However, it is also probably worth it to pay millions of dollars to take a shuttle into space. I would definitely not pay that amount despite its grandeur. Not to mention that personally, and I am sure I am not alone, I usually only cough up the money to pay for one good nintendo series (i.e. Pokemon). With games for consoles and computers, it is simply not cost effective to purchase every game I want. So if I need to pay 300 dollars, to gain the ability to purchase games from a franchise, which will be 30-40 dollars each, I am certainly not being cost effective.

You know it's Nintendo, it doesn't matter what they do, because whatever it is it WILL sell. Bet your last dollar on it. By the way, nice billboard Sessler.

$300 + tax (12% in my country) is a hefty price for a handheld considering you have to buy games and accessories on top of that. This could come out to be $400ish+ per person. I have 3 DSs that I purchased at $125 each for my three kids on their birthdays but I'm not spending close to $1200 for them this time around.
For that price I could pick up either PS3 or 360 console or for the price of my three kids get them a new 52" TV that they could enjoy their existing games in stunning size and clarity. So many alternative choices that may be wiser IMO.
It may be magic but I don't pay 300+ per person for tickets to see a magic show no matter how good it is.

Yeah good point about the date. Around the holidays people splurge, people then find they spent too much afterwards and hold off on buying expensive electronics for example the 3DS. Yeah, I bought the DS fat, then upgraded to the DS Lite so I'll probably get suckered into buying the 3DS fat haha. I think the main thing Nintendo is hoping for is that being the only one with glasses free 3D that people will pay a bit more for their product.

I bet, though, that the 3DS will come with something like how the Wii came with Wii Sports and how the DS had the demo for Metroid Prime: Hunters. I bet there will be something substantial with it.

Great video, I'm personally looking forward to the 3ds.

This is definately the case of the early adopter tax, along with anything being 3D automatically being more expensive. I am going to wait at least a year for the next version.

how is it this hard for people to understand?!? IT WON'T COST $300 DOLLARS! Electronics are way more expensive in Japan than they are here! seriously look at current console prices in the US compared to japan, if you convert the price from Yen to USD it's always $50+ dollars more than the actual American price. it's more expensive because people in Japan are willing to pay more for entertainment compared to the US, even Big Budget Hollywood films are usually $40-$50 USD in Japan while the American price is usually $15-$20. they're willing to spend more for the same thing.
