DC Universe Online Delayed Into 2011, PS3 Collector's Edition Announced

Sony Online Entertainment announced today its superhero MMO DC Universe Online, which was previously scheduled for release on the PlayStation 3 and PC in November, has been delayed into early 2011.

"SOE is dedicated to delivering the highest quality game experiences possible," SOE president John Smedley said in a statement. "DC Universe Online  is the first game of its kind, and a truly massive undertaking -- the first action MMO set in the DC Universe, the first MMO on the PlayStation 3, and the first time the entire DC Universe will be accessible to the millions of fans who are eagerly anticipating its release. As the game heads into external beta testing, this extra time will allow us to address community feedback in a meaningful way. When we get deeper into external beta, we'll be able to share more information regarding the new launch date."

SOE also announced VIP key card holders and players how have registered at the DC Universe Online website will start receiving beta keys next week. If you’ve already placed a pre-order, or you pre-order the game before November 15, you’ll receive a beta key by November 30. There isn’t a firm start date of for the beta yet, however if you pre-order the game after Nov. 15, you’ll be given beta access a week early, and get to be part of a “special beta ending event entitled Battle of the Legends.”

Also, SOE plans to release a PS3 collector’s edition in North America that contains everything found in the PC version:

  • DCUO Batman statue
  • Limited edition Art of DC Universe Online art book
  • DCUO Legends Issue #0 comic book with a Jim Lee variant cover
  • DCUO Prestige comic presentation of the DCUO back-story
  • Limited edition Jim Lee-drawn poster version of the Issue #0 comic book variant cover

'Tis the season for delays it seems. Where does this one fall on your "Are you kidding me?!" meter?

I'm actually quite saddened by this news. I was looking forward to it being released a week before Black Ops. Now I have to wait until whenever they want to release it? At least this gives them a chance to work out the bugs. Though I still have my reservations considering who made the game in the first place.

No big deal, releasing it a little before Cataclysm (now that we know the release date) would have been a bad idea because people would be going back to WoW a little after the release of this. And one thing we always complain about with new MMOs is that they are rushed to market with to many bugs and not enough content, well, they are not making that mistake, so big ups to them.

I ignore release dates until about 3 weeks before the game hits the shelves.

Cataclysm should have no effect on DCUO. Different types of games for one. Besides as a previous poster said, with only 5 more levels of conent Cataclysm will be pretty much "done" before spring anyways.

There must be some problems they can't iron out if they extend the date only a month from previously stated release of November. I'm in "wait and see the reviews" mode myself.

Well, their excuse is pretty much the same excuse Epic used for the delay for GoW 3. I got no problem with the game needing more polish to avoid being a failure like APB. But if DCU Online is sandwiched between Cataclysm and The Old Republic, they are going to find it tough to compete with those two.

Does it frighten anyone else that Star Wars: The Old Republic is already being shortened into an acronym? Maybe it's just the Canadian in me that's scared. Don't get me wrong, I really want to be a smuggler in The Old Republic, but I find acronyms lazy and at time intimidating.

Considering I had to look up the other day to remember when it coming out, I'm not that surprised. But they probably lost any chance of me playing by doing this, unless SW:TOR doesn't come out next spring.

Bound to happen. They have shown little to no game play footage in the last 3-6 months. Clearly that has delay written all over it.

I"m bummed. It only had a month to go, plus the new potential time frame isn't as convenient as the November release. Oh well, just have to look at the bright side and figure that the game will be better for it.

not to excited about this....on one hand I'm happy that they're making it what fans want it to be...on the other hand....i'm ticked because it was the only game I was looking forward to the rest of the year. Unlike other people, I don't play WoW. Not because I don't want to but my right hand really isn't to functional or quick. Only my thumb is 100% which is why I was getting dcuo on ps3. Was mad that pc got collector's edition n not ps3 but now, not so much

yeah I'm not sure why they want to compete against WOW after the fact. But you have to think they'll be targeting first time MMO players whereas Cataclysm is for the die-harder WOW'ers.

but I think Smedley should check his PS3 history...."the first MMO on the Playstation 3"....how about both Final Fantasy XI being on the PS2 and Final Fantasy XIV coming out first for the PS3. Marketing is one thing but know your history before you make what you think are smackdown, "look at how cool we are" comments.

I can understand them wanting to make sure the game is everything the fans want it to be and not broken in anyway...but they have had what?? almost 3 years since this game was announced at E3?? With all these delays they might wanna consider they might wanna consider not charging people for the servers.

Better then releasing the game early with millions of bugs and 0 content. I hope they get this relase down right. Cataclysm will be already passed its prime time play so this might actually help them.

Big Big mistake considering Cataclysm just got a Dec 7th release. I am an MMO guy as well as my buddies at work and this was the game that was going to turn us from WOW. Now that WOW expansion is coming out sooner we are reconsidering our decision.

falls pretty high up there. i've been so excited for this and i've honestly been counting down the days. oh well, i guess. i've waited this long, and i'd rather get the best quality product than a game of poorer quality.
