Five Cities Fallout 4 Should Visit

By now you've seen our exclusive Fallout: New Vegas video, and while you're chewing that bloody episode over in your head, check out where we think Fallout should head after cashing out in New Vegas.

Fallout has existed in the wastelands of Southern California, the blasted remains of Washington, D.C., and now on the rebuilt scraps of Las Vegas, born again from the ashes in the bright lights and clinking slot machines of New Vegas. We've seen both coasts of North America, its Sin City playground, and even Pittsburgh and Anchorage, Alaska via DLC ... but what about the rest of the world?

Five Cities Fallout 4 Should Visit

Tokyo

The Land of the Rising Sun is a perfect place to take the vault-dwelling franchise. Especially because of its dense population and the obsession with gadgetry. Not to mention all the noodle stands, arcades, pachinko machines, and karaoke bars. Imagine a high-tech, secret Japanese vault drilled deep into the face of the planet, quietly waiting to be awoken when the time was right. Given China's involvement in the series of events that led to the devastation on the surface, Japan just feels right. Why wouldn't they be involved somehow?

Of course, with all the beeping, blooping lights, and the reliance on circuitry instead of human know-how, something goes wrong. That's where you get ejected from the vault, and have to navigate the choked streets of Shinjuku, looking for a desperate solution to save the rest of the populace from the ticking time-bomb that your vault has turned into. Plus, there has to be room for a Mutant or Mecha Godzilla in here somewhere. It is the apocalypse, after all, and this is the sort of atomic-age stuff the city lives for. After spending plenty of time being lost on these very streets, and perplexed by the labyrinthine layout of the city, Tokyo deserves to be on the Fallout map.

The Outback

Secretly, quietly, and out of the prying eyes of most of the public, a gigantic bio-dome was created smack dab in the middle of the Outback. As part of a hushed up, multi-national plan, Ayer's Rock was hollowed out and turned into an enormous bio-habitat meant to become the last vestiges of life as we know it. Every species of animal, breed of fish, and type of plant would be housed inside, meant to be a living vault for when the surface could be repopulated again. A select group of scientists, athletes, artists, celebrities, and wealthy people were sent inside before the door was sealed, unknowingly creating an automatic sort of "Apocalyptic Survivor" episode inside.

As the years pass, and personalities devolve, things get worse and worse on the inside. Of course, things aren't going much better on the outside, but no one knows that because they are completely cut off from outside influences. After twenty years have passed, the inside group divides into factions, with half of the group wanting to break out and abandon the experiment. Upon successfully breaching the enormous door, they stumble out blinking into ... a post-apocalyptic world in the Australian Outback. The hazy, overcast skies have played with the ecosphere of Oz, and what was once a sun-blasted wasteland is now a dense overgrowth of bizarre plants: a hybrid of the multiple samples in the dome that leaked beneath the surface. Can you survive in the mutant kangaroos?

London

If you've ever seen Children of Men, then you know that the British government is set to soldier on through the end times of the world. It only feels natural that this should apply to a the post apocalypse as well. There's no reason to leave London out of things, especially when you consider how tightly the United Kingdom always seems to come together during a crisis. Remember all of the actual fallout shelters built during WWII, and how there was the extended Blitz of Britain? Nearly nine continuous months of bombings did nothing more than strengthen the country's resolve.

But deep beneath the London tube system, farther down than the most rat-infested sewer systems lies: the British Vault Project. Originally intended to be part of the larger vault system in the United States, Britain's government quickly took over the control and installation of their own series of vaults, hiding them beneath existing public works excavations and projects so as to hide their construction. But due to tax cuts and setbacks, as the bombs start falling, they aren't complete yet. You have to scramble to find the last partially operational vault, and seal yourself inside while Big Ben collapses and Parliament explodes around you. Hidden beneath Trafalgar Square, you'll find that getting in is just as hard as getting out.

The Amazon

Nearly every Fallout game has been set in a war-blasted zone where many of the standing structures have been reduced to ruin and rubble. Naturally, you wouldn't expect any of the biologic, chlorophyll-fueled life forms to survive, but that's where things flourished deep in the Amazon. You've been revived inside of Vault 76, buried under the city of Austin, Texas, and as you begin making your way through the rubble and exploring the city, you're quickly scooped up by a roving band of survivors who are making a trip down deep inside of what was once Brazil, looking for a mysterious, long-rumored vault that was built near the Amazon river.

No one knows exactly what this vault holds, only that there are several different groups set on finding it first. Bigger in scale than any Fallout game before, the game requires you to, first, gather the rest of your ragtag team, then get yourself down to the Amazon while staying alive; not an easy task. Once you're deep inside the rainforest, which has since been irradiated and turned into a botanist's ultimate nightmare, then the real trouble begins. If you thought Super Mutants were tough, wait until you come across a shambling, self-aware canopy tree. Remember all the hairspray you used to expend into the atmosphere without a care in the world? Well, payback is a real bitch. From the lush green foliage to the cavernous dried-up Amazon riverbed, experience Fallout like you've never seen it before.

The Dark Side of the Moon

Fallout has always been terrestrially based, unless you count the all-too-brief Mothership Zeta DLC for Fallout 3. But that doesn't mean that there weren't secret government projects going on in the background that we knew nothing about. The staggeringly bizarre amount of experimental Vaults tells us that much. So why not a Moonbase Vault on the other side of the Moon? It would be extremely easy to hide an entire Vault-sized construction underneath the guise of "experimental space flights" and "moon rock gathering". The problem is that once you get revived in this vault, stepping outside really isn't an easy option. Or even a good idea.

Somehow you have to figure out how to organize your quickly dwindling supplies, and explore your own vault as you piece together a way to return to the surface. You'll have to keep an eye on oxygen levels, and find a way to get through the airlock and survive on the surface as you look for clues and answers. There are several different ways to leave the moon, and ultimately to link up with the capital wasteland, but they are not going to be easy to find. As the space madness begins to set in, you'll realize why being alone and far from the remains of the human race can drive someone to psychopathic means. Think Duncan Jones' Moon crossed with Sunshine and the best parts of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Oh, and Alien, for good measure. In space, no one can hear you scream. But in that vault they sure can, and you'll be doing it a lot.

And just in case you missed it, be sure to check out our exclusive walkthrough of the White Glove Society quest in Fallout: New Vegas.

now as much as i like the idea of other places in the world, especially london, you have to remember the background to the story of the fallout story is a what if scenario where china and the u.s are involved in a nuclear exchange known as the "great war", resulting in the post-apocalyptic world in which the game takes place. therefore if a country other than china or the united stated were to be used, there would need to be more story info added or something of the sort. and as an idea for america... new york... just because its used in everything. also i have only played 3 and new vegas so if new york was ever used, scratch it, never the same place twice. also as someone previously stated, fallout wouldnt be fallout without its u.s culture. and dont hate cause i counteracted this threads idea, cause i think its brilliant, im just stating the facts. have a nice day

It needs to stay in the U.S. It simply can't go anywhere else. Fallout is set in the American 50s. Not in English50s, not in Japan after a nuke hit them, not in Australian50s, not in the Amazon jungle. It sends out a anticommunism message and it needs to be all red, white, and blue And before you all say im saying this because im american you are wrong.

(first things first i apologies for the grammar i can't be arsed with it) i'm biased being a englishman but i feel fallout in london holds a great deal of potential if you look at the pros and the cons of the idea it comes up trumps basically what london holds and england for that matter is a place that has a quantity of different cultures and ideology's a different classes from the ruthless capitalists that sit on their perch's in canary wharf to our anarchist punk culture then you look at petty gangsters and then to mad upper class eccentrics its a melting pot of personalities and not to mention the average englishman who has the resolve and the sheer hardworking bravery to just get on and survive. while england does not possess the wildlife potential as the U.S.A so your not going to be decapitating yao guai or radscorps (which i for one will be pleased to be rid of any aracnids) but what britain has is a goverment that is generally conservative which if you add the nuclear fallout swings dramatically to the faschist right and creates a tyrannical force like the enclave. but on the backdrop of this is britains dark and somber city atmosphere perfect for post-apocalyptia anyway i doubt fallout will ever move from the US personally i'd like to explore the windy city, miami(mainly because giant alligators and snakes appeals to me) but most of all the city that i dream of is Boston again because i'm british i'd love to see a post-apocalyptic war between a redcoat wannabe faction and post apocalyptic patriots of the American wastes i think'd be funny and if any american goes the redcoats ould just lose again or slag of britain may i teach you a little history that you guys always leave out while fighting you we also were fighting spain and france all on the same continent thats why we lost not that the patriots where badass MF'S!

I know this post is old, but I simply had to put in my crummy two cents...

Fallout should NOT leave the U.S. Like earlier posts pointed out, Fallout is based on the principles, ideals, and dark humor that comprises America and American culture. Why these G4 douchebags can't seem to realize that, I have no idea.

For myself, I love being able to travel in a large city, and see it's ruins in splendorous detail. I friggin' hated New Vegas when it came to that, because New Vegas just wasn't large enough for me. Being able to travel in downtown Washington D.C., viewing the derelict buildings and the junked cars strewn all over the place...it was so beautiful. That is because there is a tragic beauty in loss. When you go to a desert, it is a different beauty, but it is filled with emptiness. Seing a dead city fills me with emotion, but also awe. When I got to the Washington Mall and viewed a crumbling Capitol building and a nearly destroyed Washington Monument, I was stunned. It was a piece of breath-taking scenery that haunts me to this day. The only other game I've seen that captures that perfect atmosphere is Metro: 2033, but I won't discuss that here, seeing as it is not related to Fallout.

By the way, Skyrim came out, so now is the perfect time to discuss Fallout 4. I am very glad Bethesda won the legal rights to continue producing the series. Interplay couldn't get their crap together.

We have seen Chicago in Fallout: Tactics. It was cool, and a return visit to there would be nice. New York is a great idea, but it is simply so big I doubt it could be fitted into a console game. Florida, Texas, Wisconsin...ugh. I have had WAY too much wilderness in my last Fallout game. I want a nice, big, meaty city. Seattle was a cool mention, but why stop there? I think there should be a Fallout game that spans from Salem, Oregon, all the way up to Vancouver in annexed Canada. Plenty of cities, and plenty of gorgeous wildnerness. The great thing about the Pacific Northwest is that is has a slew of environments; coastal terrain, rain forest, temperate forest, taiga, grasslands, desert, mountains, and tundra if you add weather to the game. Imagine trudging through thick snows in the ruins of Seattle, eyeing your environment to make sure winterized ghouls, mutated creatures...or worse...aren't stalking you. Imagine seeing a half-shattered Space Needle rising from the midst of crumbling skyscrapers. Imagine the Tacoma Dome, now a shelter for a feminist cult of mass murderers who prey on men, who they wrongly blame for the Great War?

Imagine a Portland, sunk deep within a radioactive crater filled with irradiated riverwater, targeted by an experimental planet-buster nuke DROPPED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT because they mistakenly believed it was the site for a Chinese invasion. Imagine popping out of a Vault near New Salem, and defending it against a group of psychotic raiders addicted to a new form of Psycho and Jet called "Mushroom Cloud." Imagine wandering the deserted streets of Vancouver B.C., helping remnants of the Enclave (freed from the demoralizing and corrupt influence of President Richardson) as they endeavor to hunt for lost technology and set up the first legitimate U.S. government outpost seen in the last two hundred years. Imagine finally having a choice between aiding the Enclave (a group trying desperately to escape their wretched reputation) and the Brotherhood of Steel, who are far more heartless than their Washington D.C. counterparts. Imagine trekking through the dust of a newly formed radioactive desert spanning all of eastern Oregon and Washington, guarding caravans against Deathclaws, Super-Mutants and savage tribals.

This is why I think the next Fallout game should be based in the Pacific Northwest. We are a vastly underappreciated and misunderstood area. I think that our legacy would only be enriched by a Fallout game, especially one that would color us differently in an alternate dimension.

Failing that, I would simply love to see Fallout I and Fallout II be re-mastered as a first-person RPG using the Fallout III engine. It would glorious, especially getting to walk around downtown L.A. (A.K.A. the Boneyard).

Whew! That was the longest post I have EVER done. Hell, it's one of the only posts I've ever done.

Please let me know what you think.

Just an idea - set the game 500 years after New Vagas, in London, rebuilt, the govenment has become all powerfull (like a successful enclave, think v for vendetta). You have always lived under thier compete domination, get contacted by the resistance movement, getting wind of this the govenment kills your family and friends as an example, but you escape joining the resistance movement to over through the govenment, less low powered guns and ammo due to law, govenment forces well equiped and trained, few goules ro raiders as hunted to extinction, perhaps successfull control of super mutents using control masks. Rebilding the empire, so locations like india, hong kong and australia as dlc, perhaps even an invation of US? Large US influence so simmilar advertising and products.

I think the best places fallout 4 could take place would have to be 1. Houston, tx the nasa element could be cool, plus the military has a large presence in tx. 2. New york, ny the big apple would be perfect for its memorable land marks. 3. Chicago, il same as new york. 4. L.A. California it is a large population and many landmarks. I think houston is the best option simply because texas has a bigger history with guns and people bent on survival at all costs. Plus i think the brotherhood os steel or a similar power armored organization should play a bigger role than the one they had in new vegas. I personally like power armor. Actually any large city in Texas, Illinois or the midwest would be preferablecooked to another eastcoast/westcoast game. Oh and it would be stupid for fallout to leave the United States.

never make a fallout game set in Tokyo, that's the worst idea ever, especially since Japan was the only county that had a Nuke drop on them. so Tokyo is a bad idea, and the outback is another bad idea, all desert and no buildings doesn't sound like a good idea. and the moon sounds like a good dlc. if any place would make a good location, it would be Egypt or Los Angles or Portland Oregon

Well on some of the Logic out there, why not set it in Denver Colorado. Given that Rex was a police dog from Denver before the war broke out? plus it would be a bad ass place considering the Snow and thing hidden Deep in the Rocky Mountains. The mystique for Colorado Lives on

FattyMcgee89, while rudely stated, is correct. The Fallout universe is based around US culture. only one city on that list was applicable and while i would love to see london, it's just not possible. also many plotlines on this list were too linear. As for a city to visit, I personally want to visit New York. Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, the boardwalk, and many other locations. Theres also San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, etc. plenty of acceptable locations

I dont want a setting too similar to New Vegas. I want Each game to bring a different enviroment. Fallout Alaska sounds good to me, maybe put Sarah Palin in the game and the Contract Killer/Law Bringer Perk will do the rest. Polar Yao guai...

I personally would like to see it based in Texas. There are multiple lage cities you could visit. Not to mention the surplus of guns.

Btw I think the amazon would be a good DLC idea.
