UPDATED 10:30AM PST: A Lionhead rep just told me that the game is a European exclusive. Too bad.
European gamers looking to get a head start on amassing their fortunes in Lionhead Studios’ upcoming Fable III will have their chance when the newly announced Fable III: Kingmaker stakes its claim on mobile devices starting October 4.
Kingmaker lets players virtual plant flags, in support of either the Rebels or the Royals, across real-world locations, thanks to the GPS functionality found in many of today’s smartphones. The number of flags in an area determine which faction has “conquered” it. Capturing territories nets players gold, which can then be used in Fable III.
“To be able to earn gold you can use in your Fable III game, and to check-in and claim land for your side is brilliant for both Fable III and Xbox 360,” said Lionhead creative director Peter Molyneux. “We all love the innovation and feeling of being connected that Kingmaker brings to gamers.”
Lionhead is no stranger to this kind of tie-in strategy. The developer released Fable II: Pub Games on Xbox Live Arcade a couple months before Fable II was released, offering players the chance to start building their fortune and then carry it into the game.
Fable III: Kingmaker will be released in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, and Sweden on October 4. No word yet on whether it will be released outside of Europe, but I’m waiting to hear back from Lionhead about it, so stay tuned.
