Well, it’s official...sort of. Nintendo announced today during a press event in Tokyo that the Nintendo 3DS will arrive in Japan on February 26, 2011 for 25,000 yen, or around $300.
Nintendo was a bit less specific about the release date for North America and Europe, but it did say the highly anticipated/mind melting handheld would be released sometime in March 2011. No holiday-time 3D handheld gaming for you!
Company president Satoru Iwata also showed off the 3DS’ new passive tag functions, which searches out and finds other nearby handhelds to connect with, and can be used to download content while the 3DS is in sleep mode.
Iwata also revealed the new Mii Studio, which, as GamesIndustry.biz reports, players can use to make Miis out of pictures taken by the 3DS’ camera. The 3DS will also come bundled with a 2GB memory card.

There is no way i'm buying the 3DS at launch, next holiday probably. $300 is way to steep for me let some good games come out first., let the price drop a little. And when it is going to download things and search for other DS's when in sleep mode i'm guessing that's going to run down the battery a little. I'm going to wait and see how it turns out.

A lot depends on the launch window library if I get it right away or wait a bit. I still have a lot to do on my original DS.
I don't know why people are comparing it to home consoles. Those have been out several years and have since dropped in price.

$300? Too pricey. I'll take a ps3 or wait for the psp 2 since I don't have either.

Yea hopefully it'll only be $250 here cause $300 is a steep price for a hand held even if it does have angels souls trapped in the top screen. But no matter what I know I'm buying it.
Bomblord
it's actually closer to $250

Well then, $300 is well a lot.. I know I won't get it at launch cause I'll be broke by the badass games coming out that year.. Wait and see I guess, but I'll just get games before I think about getting another system.

WOW! But a PS3 first.

$300? That seems a little steep to me when 1, the only way I can see how it work is to have it in my hands myself, 2 there main console on the market is cheaper.
This makes me wonder if Nintendo will end up focusing more on the hand held console market.
But the main reason I wont buy this on launch is if everyone goes out and buys it for $300, what do you think Sony and Microsoft will price there next consoles at? If that is the case console gaming will end up becoming just as expensive if not more expensive as pc gaming.
The more I think about it though I think Nintendo might just be milking the Japanese audience who they know will buy it for $300. Hard core gamers who love there DS and have there own source of income with probably buy it as well, but I can't imagine many parents shelling out $300 for to them will be just another DS unless they go to the store and see it for themselves. And even if they do see it for themselves, with how ill informed parents are with new tech they will probably not buy it out of fear that it will damage there child's eyes, or that is how they will try to rationalize with the child so they don't have to spend the money.
Personally if it is $300 the only way I will buy it right away is if it is backwards compatible with DS games and gamestop gives some trade in deal to get over $100 off.

I wish that they werent pushing this like it was a home console, I would pay for this tech in two years for the same price as a dsi... why not just wait until they arent charging the same price as a home console and give us a new, AWESOME console in HD?

You need to wait for NOA to say, 300 in Japan is probably only 250 here. Reggie does know a thing or do about business.

Let's keep in mind that this was the Japanese release that was announced. I seem to recall that Nintendo hardware always sells more expensively in Japan than in North America or Europe. I expect the 3DS will sell cheaper here in the US. I say anywhere between $189.99 to $229.99 will be the US price. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but, I doubt it'll be $300.00 here in the US.

i remember having to buy the psp when it first released and only recently has it been getting truly awesome games. I'll be getting this day of release as long as OoT, Animal Crossing, that new paper mario, starfox, or resident evil is also available.

Despite having impressive-looking games, the price is high. If it comes to the US for $300, what is the incentive to buy a handheld more expensive than a Wii and an Arcade XBox 360 version and the same price as a PS3. Not to mention the momentum the iPhone is gaining.
The 3DS will sell like crazy in Japan for $300. In the US, it will probably sell at that price point but would sell tons for $199-229. Unless the 3DS can compete with the entertainment value of an HD console, it is not worth $300.
DrNo0
this is worth more than the wii im might not even buy this no way its worth the same thing as a console
bigbowser101
It is more than what we were expecting. However, for the kind of technology the 3DS is capable of, the price is right. Compared to trying to get a 3D tv, you are paying at least 1,000 dollars and you have to wear those glasses. I can't think of anyone who likes wearing 3D glasses.
I would call 300 dollars pretty worth it to buy something that is 3D and you don't need to use glasses.
orange_shirt_guy
Wow $300! That is more than I was expecting, you could buy a Wii and two extra controllers for that
Ericvon
Silly me thought I wanted entertaining news and discussion about video games. Oh how wrong I was good thing I seen that ad for P90X...... What a tool.
Symicide
Hmmm $300??? I like Nintendo and the DS, but for something that gets the wrong kind of attention when it comes to good games, not really the price. But like every other DS since the first masses of parents are gonna buy the upgrade for their kids. I'm still playing on the first gen :D
