Nintendo 3DS

Well, it’s official...sort of. Nintendo announced today during a press event in Tokyo that the Nintendo 3DS will arrive in Japan on February 26,  2011 for 25,000 yen, or around $300.

Nintendo was a bit less specific about the release date for North America and Europe, but it did say the highly anticipated/mind melting handheld would be released sometime in March 2011. No holiday-time 3D handheld gaming for you!

Company president Satoru Iwata also showed off the 3DS’ new passive tag functions, which searches out and finds other nearby handhelds to connect with, and can be used to download content while the 3DS is in sleep mode.

Iwata also revealed the new Mii Studio, which, as GamesIndustry.biz reports, players can use to make Miis out of pictures taken by the 3DS’ camera. The 3DS will also come bundled with a 2GB memory card.

$300 dollars for a product that, by design, cannot be shown off in screenshots or conventional video. GENIUS.

    Well, Caveat emptor.

everyone who knows the gaming business should know it wil not be $300 here stuff is always more expensive overseas like DVDs cost $40. So it will be lower like $250. We are the biggest video game market in the world and Nintendo knows it will not sell as well above $250 especially since the PSPgo flopped massively at that price. I know the 3DS offers LOTS more but the average consumer will see the big price tag and wait for the price drop. I think the sweet spot is $200 same price as the wii.

I am very upset and sad they will not release it for the holidays. I guess i will just ask for gift cards for christmas and use those to buy it :-)

all i have to say is that even at $250 it is worth it and it has the best launch lineup i have ever seen.

Soooo, neither a firm release date or price was announced for it in the United States....yet the name of this article specifically says it was.....So, that was just a lie to get us to click in the article and boost your hits??

That would be like me posting an article that says "Sony announced new PSP", yet when you click on it, I just say "Well, not really, but some devs claim they have it".

Since the PSP2 is all but confirmed since Dev kits are being sent out as we speak. Which probably means a E3 2011 announcement and 2011 Christmas release. It will be interesting to see how Sony prices it and how strong hardware wise it is in comparison to the 3DS.

The funny thing here people, is the fact that Nintendo could make the price point of the 3DS $500 and it would still sell millions of units world wide. When you have a loyal fanbase and a company that has sat on the throne of dominance of the handheld market like nintendo has, with 3D tech being all the rage right now, it's kinda hard to make money a point of argument when you know people will pay to have this device.

The only way that price will fly over here is if it had a decent amount of launch titles available but if you actually think about it, the price is fair. Its capable of going from 3D to 2D with just a slide of a dial (how the hell can they do that??) Graphic capabilities exceeding the Wii(lul, way to show off inferior console power) and so much more, packed into a little handheld system and look at the games coming for it:

    Kid Icarus(Finally!)
    Mario(obviously)
    Donkey Kong(obviously again)
    Metroid(sir obviously the third)
    MGS
    Resident Evil
    Star Fox(Oh hell yeah!)
Zelda, OoT(Best one of the series, imo)
    Super Street Fighter 3D
    Contra(!!!)
    Final Fantasy
    Kingdom Hearts
    Dragon Quest
Ninja Gaiden(OMG!! So stoked for this!)
Ubisoft titles(Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and Assassins Creed)

And the list goes on and on. Its so worth, if you ask me. Thats my opinion anyway, I just hope I have enough money to buy it at launch

The price is worth guys, visit www.ign.com to get all the details, screenshots, trailers, news, everything that g4tv.com chooses not to cover and it'll change your mind. P.S. PS3 had a $600 price tag at launch for a crappier launch titles than this will have and it has a virtual consol for games going all the way back to super mario bros on the first gameboy.

To be completely honest, I think $300 is a fair price. PSP Go is listed at $250, and to be completely honest, that system is far from being worth $150, let alone $250. Don't get me wrong, the PSP is awesome, I have one, I just don't think the Go is worth a cent.

The 3DS is offering quite a bit to users, so I could see it being priced higher than normal, like $250 maybe? I would drop $250 into this system. I mean, come on, 3D without the glasses.

I'm getting this for sure. Also, trade in credit anyone? I'm sure Gamestop will allow trade-ins for $80-$120 for DSi/DSiXL-LL systems.

Pokemon, Resident Evil, Dragon Quest, Metal Gear Solid, Mario, not to mention Kid Icarus. OH, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. There's more than enough reason to get this system. I'm readying my $300 to be put into my savings account now. March 2011, here we come.

Now I have to decide between a new Xbox or a 3DS. Gaming isn't getting any cheaper. :(

I agree with XwingVmanX here, if the Nintendo 3DS is the kids MAIN console, then MAYBE I can see some parents dishing out that type of money for this system.

But like he said, people will buy this at launch and really I can't blame anyone and I am not downing this idea of no 3D glasses. However, I will say that to pay just as much for the new Xbox 360 with 250GB of hard drive, you are only getting a convenience of not needing to wear those glasses for 3D; to me, that is a little pricey. Sure the 3DS will have all those nice gadgets and everything but is $300 really worth the convenience?

Personally, I really could care less about 3D gaming, like Dana Vinson said on feedback, it's like a money sucking scam trying to gain money from everyone on technology that isn't perfect yet. I don't want to spend so much on a 3D tv or a game console just because it has a 3D option. 10 times out of 10 I will be opting for the 2D game system and tv that is much cheaper and just as good. 3D doesn't make the game any more special than 2D in the gaming world.

Yeah, you might get 3D, but you're still just looking at a 2D screen. It really isn't there!

I at one point was seriously thinking about buying this hand held since I never got into the DS before and thought it would be cool to try out the 3d gaming on it. Though if the cost of admission is $300 they can forget it. No way a hand held system is worth as much as a console system and if I'm going to pay that kind of price I'll just buy the Wii for myself and my son and call it good.

Eh I don't know I don't think $300 is too much but ya I agree don't think it'll be $300 in the US. As for the price with new systems come higher prices.
