UPDATED 11:51 AM PST: SCEA PR just confirmed to me that LBP2’s new release date is January 18, 2011.
LittleBigPlanet 2, Media Molecule’s uber-ambitious and creativity extravaganza of a sequel, will sadly not be released this year, and will instead hit shelves sometime in January 2011, the developer confirmed today. I’m already making a LBP level where Sackboy has to navigate through my broken heart.
Media Molecule explained on its official site that “LittleBigPlanet 2 is a crazy dream, a dream to allow players to make whatever kind of game they want…but like all of the most ambitious ideas, it can be a considerable challenge to turn these dreams in to fun games. We’ve all been working like powered-up space ninjas and we’re almost there, but because we love what we’ve made, and we love our little sack-friends, and most of all we love all our fans out there, we couldn’t let you all get together until we knew we were giving you the best experience imaginable.”
As such, the developer goes on to say that its decided to “allow ourselves a bit more time to deliver the experience that our great fans and community deserve.” In the meantime, however, Media Molecule is planning something special for its bummed out fans.
“We are going to find a way to give more of you a taste of LBP2 prior to launch, so stay tuned.”
Media Molecule is already rolling out the LBP2 beta to especially active community members in Europe and in a few weeks US players will have a chance to check it out as well. Perhaps these new “plans” involve expanding the beta even wider. I’m waiting to hear back from Media Molecule about it, so I’ll keep you posted.

I guarantee you this isn't to polish the game. It's to combat piracy.
They're spending extra time trying to either lock LBP2 to a new firmware, which is improbable since not everyone has their PS3 connected to the internet. This could be countered by including the latest firmware with the game though. Even then I think that's against the EULA.
Or they are trying to change/embed files so that the game won't work with the backup launcher. Sad to say neither will work. Just look at PSP piracy. Pirates will simply strip the files from the game.
The only people that will be affected by this are Sony and MM because they won't get all of the holiday sales.

Well, that's disappointing, but understandable. I imagine a game with such variation and depth is a nightmare for testers. I doubt they just wanted to avoid other big releases since LBP is basically in a genre of its own.
Regardless of when it comes out, my collector's edition will be waiting for me.

There are no big games coming out this fall. They are all coming out in the spring. It looks like im gonna have to *gulp* play old games this fall/winter =/

Awwwwwwwwwweeeee :( Okay take your time Media and for all those claiming it's because of CoD And Reach, it's not. The smart money's on LBP eff what the dummies talk (excluding Reach in the last statement).

It has NOTHING to do with the other games coming out, the game is just really buggy and they want to release a polished game unlike Call of Duty.

Oh and the way they announced its delay was basically a hidden way of saying "We f'ed up on some stuff and we have to fix it before we release". Haha still can't wait though, I just wish everything wasn't coming out next Spring (technically that's Winter, but most games I want come out next Spring).

This pisses me off! What is with all of these games getting delayed this year? First RDR, then Dead Rising 2, then LA NOIR, and now this. WTF! I really wanted this game for holiday season! And why is it that every game I want isn't coming out until the exact same time around Spring 2011, what happened to everything being a Fall/Winter release?

So GT5 is the only exclusive coming to Ps3 for the rest of the year. (besides the Move games)

:(, that's too bad, but I guess you can see that coming. There are just a lot of games coming out now to the end of the year. And a lot of those games are huge, expected to be awesome, if not awesomer. But I do hope they take more time and fix it up and make it look a little bit better, that's always good i guess.

@dravinclaw im not defending cod of duty series and all there glitches all im saying is they dont want to compete with them, and it doesnt matter is lbp 2 is a fps or not i bet more youngsters would rather play cod than lbp. i for one will not be buying anymore cod games im just saying....

@aodmisery ummm hate break this to you but LBP2 is not an FPS and unlike call of duty they are willing to fix bugs and glitches before the game is shipped and a few more months of polish is allways welcomed for a quality game
