Fresh from the massive success of Inception, director Christopher Nolan says he's considering creating a video game based on the film.
"We are looking at... developing a video game based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can't fit into a feature film," Nolan said at a Rome press conference. "That's something we've been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years."
Generally, when anyone suggests making a game based on a movie, my reaction, "Please, spare us," but in this case, I'm making an exception. I think a game based on the Inception universe would be awesome.
First off, from a certain standpoint, Inception already feels like a video game. The film's structure seems to owe a huge debt to gaming, what with the various levels of dreams, each with various "rules" about gravity, physics and time. Parts of Inception feel like a platformer -- the scene in the hotel -- and parts feel like a shooter -- the battle in front of the snow covered vault. You could even argue that the van sequences are like a racing game. So I think Nolan "gets it."
If Nolan were to have anything to do with an Inception game, he'd be able to push the form into new and interesting directions, as opposed to trying to re-make his movie with some tacked on action.
The future may hold great things.
