The King of Kong is back: Steve Wiebe, star of documentary King of Kong, has regained his Donkey Kong crown. Today, Twin Galaxies, official score keepers of ancient video game records, announced that Steve Weibe has retaken his crown and the world record for Donkey Kong. Wiebe scored 1,064,500 points on August 30.
Wiebe last held the Donkey Kong record in spring of 2007, only to be bested by his movie rival Billy Mitchell months later. Mitchell's score fell to New York's Hank Chien in March of this year, but the Florida hot sauce distributor and all around awesome gentleman regained the title on July 31 with a score of 1,062,800 points.
Wiebe made a previous attempt to break the record live on G4 at E3 2009, but was unsuccessful. Check it out in the video below:
I scored over 8 million points at Donkey Kong once, but I forgot to hit record, and I was never able to verify this feat. Now I live a life of bitterness and regret, having vowed never to play Donkey Kong again... unless there's some worldwide crisis, and the only way I can save the earth is through Donkey Kong.
No post about Donkey Kong records is complete without embedding the video you see below, in which just deposed Donkey Kong king Billy Mitchell lets you in on what, exactly, makes Billy Mitchell so amazing.
