It’s a rare and gutsy move for a franchise to shift its focus away from an iconic – and more importantly, marketable – protagonist in favor of exploring some tangental element of the gameworld. Before the unique aesthetic or hallmark location that identifies titles like Fallout or BioShock, an identifiable hero can make or break a franchise. Certainly, games such as Halo or God War or Devil May Cry would somehow be made lesser by the absence of Master Chief, Kratos or Dante...Without their familiar brand of blood-letting, the series would inevitably stumble and falter, right?
Or would they?
In addition to the recent announcement that the Devil May Cry reboot will be dumping it’s white-haired, red-cloaked demon slayer for a younger, less identifiable iteration, rumors continue to circulate that future titles in the God of War franchise may do away with the face-painted Kratos altogether…Now, however, these series need only look toward Halo: Reach for the nod of approval that the strategy can work. While Halo Wars did part ways with series’ mainstay, Master Chief, it also ventured into a completely new genre, the RTS. Halo ODST never managed to feel like a fully fleshed title, a brief, self-contained and ultimately insubstantial chapter in the Halo universe that fans would hardly consider an essential part of the canon.
But with Reach, Bungie has told an epic story of tragedy and invasion without the iconic figure that had previously driven the core experience forward. Yet, as we battle through the final, dramatic moments of Reach, alongside our fellow comrades in Noble Team, we’re forced to ask ourselves an important question: Do we even miss Master Chief?

The answer, quite frankly, is no…Oddly, the lack of the green-clad SPARTAN seems to have both clarified and focused the story. Where the Chief’s journey often bordered on the confusing and utterly incomprehensible – virtually requiring the Halopedia to keep the details straight – the shift toward a more grounded, character-driven experience has proven wildly successful. Throughout the course of Reach, you’ll no doubt come to bond with your ill-fated teammates, and the sense of world creation – now rooted in a single, collapsing bastion for humanity – pulls the player into the narrative far more effectively than any scenario set against the dull, purple walls of a Covenant cruiser. Factor into this a vastly improved engine and a number of design choices that make the combat considerably more harrowing, and you’ve got an experience that eclipses lesser titles in the franchise.
While we do miss the singular bond between the Chief and Cortana, the vestiges of Reach’s story, heartbreaking and more tightly told, leave Master Chief at the very fringes of our imagination, floating through space until the inevitable Halo 4 reunites us all…In the meantime, with so many of us here at G4 blasting our way through Reach, we thought we’d pose the question around the office and see what the others thought…
Do you miss Master Chief?
“Didn’t miss him for a second. I like Master Chief, but he’s an invincible cipher at this point. He’s never going to die, he’s a gaming icon, and he’s utterly predictable because once a character reaches that level of commercial recognizability, it’s rare to see his handlers do anything interesting with him ever again. Reach uses unknowns who are by definition doomed, and essentially replicates the blank slate of Master Chief with Noble 6....The placement of Reach in the timeline also allows it to dovetail into the opening scene of Halo 1 and creates a nice self-contained narrative loop for the Bungie era of Halo. Where the series goes from here will inevitably be seen as a separate endeavor, as it should be.” – Matt Keil
“I’ve only played around 10 minutes of Reach so far, but as a fan of ODST, I think not having Master Chief has really widened the whole universe in the best possible way. The story isn’t just about one singular character’s journey, but a refreshing variety of characters, narratives and different personalities. In a way, it’s gotten more human for me, knowing that there are different roles that we can play in the world. That being said, I still miss Master Chief but that’s because I have some sort of weird crush on him.” -- Moye Ishimoto

“I don’t care about no Master Chief! I follow the stories in most video games I play, but not Halo. I’ve completed Halos 1, 2, 3 and I really liked all three games, but I don’t think I’ve watched a single cut-scene all the way through in any of them. I don’t even get why Halo has cut-scenes to be honest. It seems to me the story goes like this: I’m a dude with a lot of guns, and these aliens want to kill me. I murder them. Sometimes, I drive a Warthog. The End. It’s probably because I don’t care for Sci Fi as a genre, or because we never see Master Chief, but I just do not give a rat’s ass about his absence. I mean, I’m a dude in a suit of power armor in Reach, so what’s the difference? (I’m not proud of these views.)” – Stephen Johnson
“As a diehard fan of the Halo series, I am thoroughly enjoying being able to experience the universe through a new set of more developed characters. Bungie has evolved not only as game makers, but also as story tellers and the emotional tale of Reach is proof of that. By breaking away from the Master Chief storyline, which I am still a fan of, they have been able to shake some of the pre-conceived notions gamers have about a Halo game and give fans a new and reenergized experience.” – JP Shub

While the iconic figure of Master Chief has always been a symbol of Halo, I don't think that this game is in any way incomplete with his absence.
MC was a supersoldier. He was a character who leads others to victory. Noble teams story is very different- this is not a story about victory. Fans of Halo know that Reach was a lost battle- no matter how hard these characters fight, no matter how bravely they perform, they will not prevail. The best they can do is keep hope alive so that someday, one of their successors will prevail- because they cannot. While MC played a definitive role in Halo, this particular story isn't his.
I really liked this storytelling choice by Bungie. The characters, unlike MC, are not superhuman; they are vulnerable. And when they make sacrifices for their fellow soldiers, it is moving- it is perhaps the highest form of heroism...

Yeah no offense but not once during the awesome campaign on legendary (alone XD ) did I say DAMN! this would be easier if I was Master Chief plus a team of spartan III is just awesome it also ties the books more into the gaming aspect of the Halo francise (which I think is dope as hell)

For those of you that don't know, Master Chief is in the game, just not as you expected him to be, he's in the last cut scene of 'Pillar of Autumn', its a small easter egg, in memory of the great Master Chief.

Instead of asking if we miss Master Chief you should ask if we miss Cortana. She was always the driving force of the narrative.

I admit i really didn t miss Master Chief, but i honestly think that 343 should try a remake of Halo CE and Halo 2 for the 360n the Reach engine. Keep everything from both those games the same, but make it in the same game engine as Reach. That way we get two amazing games that look great that are pretty guaranteed to sell for them. Plus we get multiplayer for Halo CE and we get multiplayer back for Halo 2.

@kenerhal- Good point. But I really think the new Bungie project might just be a reboot of Marathon. Although I would give my right arm for a Halo 4. Well, make that a body part I won't need in order to play!! LOL

F* that. I hate to say it, but yes, I miss MC. Don't get me wrong, I love Reach and it's departure from MC. Reach is better without Cheif, yes. BUT, you know damn well you can't WAIT to play Halo 4 and see what Master Cheifs and Cortana's fate really is. To me, Reach isn't about "not being MC" but expanding the narrative of the Halo Universe. You start to see that Halo isn't just Master Cheif, but a whole universe of Spartans. I just can't wait to see more from the Halo Universe. More games, books, comics, and cartoons. And hopefully, someday, the movie. And if I may, the next game, Halo 4 or whatever, uh . . . Ghost's of Onyx, or a sequel. Yeah . . . yeah.

Also we didn't see Master Chirf in Reach because his story doesn't even begin until the events that happened directly after Reach. He barely escaped Reach, and to his knowledge the only spartan left. I think Bungie did an amazing job introducing us to team Noble, because now we see that Master Chief isn't some badass god like super soilder but instead apart of elite branch of the military who all were just as tough and powerful as Master Chief. Chief was just a symbol of what it means to be a spartan, which is probably why he never said anything he just did a great job at winning battles.

I think for just about everyone who bought Reach, before it came out we all probably thought about the possibility of seeing Master Cheif, especially since this is the last Halo game. But once I started playing the campaign, I actually became a fan of the Noble team and each of their personalities. If anything, after playing the game so far, I a little bummed out they never allowed Master Chief to speak. It would've been nice to know more of his or her story and personality.

For Halo, Not necessarily, see games like DMC and GoW (God of War not Gears), you need Dante and Kratos because the Story is theirs. Even in DMC4 you had Nero as the main hero, you still had half a game of Dante. In the case of Halo, while yes, 1-3 was the story was centered around Master Chief, you can look at it as, it was the End of the Covenant War through the Chief's eyes. The Halo universe is very expansive thanks to books, comics, shorts and fan stuff which opened up to ideas like Reach, Halo Wars and ODST. You built a story around a HUGE WAR, you can explore that war and in all aspects it started with Reach. While this is a bad analogy, its a kin to the Prequels and everything in Star Wars prior to A New Hope. all this history and culture and mythology, you can go back and explore it. And if Bungie/Studio 343/Microsoft, who ever picks up the continuity, they have an open world to work with.
And since Bungie, while consistantly denying it. They could even work on the tie-in for Halo into Marathon, since fans have discovered enough Easter Eggs to the Marathon series in Halo they are dead convinced Halo is the prequel to Marathon.

Master who?

I missed Master Chief alot but I missed Cortana even more, MC was always quiet but Cortana was always there. That doesnt mean that I didnt like Noble or Noble 6 specifically, they were all bad-ass, especially Kat. Im just really happy that Bungie incorporated alot of the Halo lore from the books and what not, especially Dr. Halsey.
ggamesg
I missed him, he needed at least a cameo since it was the last game, personally i feel all this odst/noble team crap has take from me being interested in the characters of the story, you dont forget characters like cortana, sgt johnson, captain keyes, and master chief, while i could give a crap less about a couple of guys who found an engineers purpose, or helped get a good character cortana to the main man master chief. Thats why i personally wanted a halo 4 over a prequel becuz i wanted to see what happened to master cheif, but now we will never know... regardless of the campaign halo reach is great game, the online multiplayer/forge/maps is phenominal.

DO i miss Master Chief? a child please is what that gets.

I missed the hell out of Master Chief. Still do. I still really enjoyed reach though. But I'm really looking forward to 343 studios continuation of the Halo franchise. It's already been said (and you can read all about it at halopedia) that there will be another game continuing the story of MC and Cortana after the events of halo 3. In fact, before they decided to do REACH, they had already started work on aforementioned halo 3 sequel. Hope 343 does a good job.
wigoff91
If anyone wants to know Master Chief is actually in Reach. Its an "Easter egg". When you beat the game on normal the last cut scene when the Pillar of Autumn is about to launch move the right joystick to the right as if you were trying to look right in first person. I'm super serial. Rooster Teeth/Achievement Hunter posted a video on you tube about it.
SourProphit
I don't think it's so much that I miss the Master Chief, but rather I miss having Cortana around as a sort of narrator for the game. I'm also a fan of the novels, so for about the first third of Reach I was confused as all hell trying to make sense out of what was happening (before realizing the game pretty much completely ignores the book and rewrites the whole battle for Reach).
And by the way, I though ODST was possibly the best Halo game of them all. Flesh out the open world city some more and you've got as perfect a game as you can make.
SuperSmasher
As a fan of all Halos, I really did enjoy not having Master Chief in the way of this story. That said, I think the final scene with "Pillar of Autumn" would have been more nostalgic if we saw Master Chief (wounded maybe) get into his pod and Cortona linking into the ship itself as the ship enters Slip Space.
NocturnalX
To be frank, Master Chief has the personality of an unsalted cracker.
Let's face it, it was the Spartan image, not Master Chief himself, that made the character an icon.
Aerindel_Prime
Halo is a world driven story, not a character riven one. There is a reason why its called Halo and not Master Chief's big adventure. I think true Halo fans love the game more for the setting and events then they do for characters. When I play a Halo game I don't really fantasize about being that person, I fantasize about living in that world.
