“This may be the most surprising news of the evening,” Capcom R&D head Keiji Inafune said last night. And then he unveiled DMC: Devil May Cry, a reboot of the iconic hack-and-slash series. Inafune might have oversold it: A Devil May Cry sequel is not exactly a shock that’s going to turn the industry on its head.
Still, there were some unexpected twists in the details revealed at Capcom’s pre-TGS event. The first surprise was that yes, this is a reboot. That might be a wise decision given that the series that was starting to get a little gray around the ears—not to mention overshadowed by the God of War games that have built on some of Devil May Cry’s design cues.
Appropriately enough for this rejuvenating rebirth, DMC will star a younger Dante—one who, judging by the trailer that Inafune premiered last night, is dealing with some heavy baggage. The trailer cuts between two scenes. In one, a shackled Dante dangles from the ceiling in a dingy tiled room while an administrator from a “young offenders rehabilitation program” demands to know his name. Dante refuses to answer, but a glimpse of his eye tell us that his emotional state is vacillating between “furious” and “no, really, quite angry.” Cut to an exterior scene—presumably a gameplay demo—and our hero releases all that pent-up rage on a gang of demons who just happened to be in the wrong parking lot at the wrong time.
The second surprise was that the game is being developed by what seems to be a team of millions, with few of the names that you might expect. Chief among them is Capcom Entertainment, Inc., the company’s San Mateo, Calif., division that is taking the lead on this project.
“You may be saying, ‘Wait a minute, Capcom USA heading up a game? I’m not sure I like this idea,” Inafune said—with lead CEI producer Alex Jones standing right next to him, no less. “But over the last year,” Inafune continued, “my reach has expanded beyond Japan. I’m now head of global R&D. … Alex works directly for me.” You get the sense that Inafune is something of a control freak? Yeah, a little bit.

Jones has to coordinate a global operation that includes not only his own team in California and Inafune’s crew in Japan, but also Ninja Theory, the development house in Cambridge, England, that’s responsible for Heavenly Sword and the upcoming Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. There’s a lot of chefs in the kitchen, but Capcom executive Kideaki Itsuno said that the diversity of perspectives is a good thing: “One thing we’ve learned in working with Ninja Theory is that they have a good sense of ‘cool’ that we don’t have on our side.”
Whether the new Dante will be accepted as “cool” or not remains to be seen, but he is different. Gone is the gray-haired silver fox of previous Devil May Cry games, replaced with a younger model whose chest-baring T-shirt, low-hanging cigarette, and perma-scowl suggest a touch of emo.
If you fear change, don’t worry—“we want to keep the essence of the gameplay,” said Ninja Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades. Translation: Dante’s no wallflower. And this was evident in the trailer. For instance, that long, thin, oh-so-cool cancer stick dangling from Dante’s mouth? At one point, he puts it out in the eye of an approaching demon. And then he stretches out a massive tentacle to hurl a car at another group of hideous ghouls. So yeah, he might look a little Rufus Wainwright-y, but this new Dante isn’t going to be sulking over his chai tea at the corner café.
Inafune was cagey on release dates—“too early to talk about anything like that”—and likewise for expected platforms. It’s still early. If we see the game before 2012, that would be the biggest surprise of all.

man this looks alsome can't wait untill it comes out. cause playing the 4 one is kinda getting old so i say bring it on let the action begin. :)

Personally I hope that they did remake the whole game and only kept the core concept of Dante, a badass that kills monsters with a big ass sword.
This feels like the best move they could of made in my opinion. In DMC 4 they made Dante into this over the top badass that wasn't afraid of anything, wasn't intimidated by anything, and wasn't an interesting character anymore.
ShockWaveNews
Soooooo, Dante went on a 20 year Meth and Heroine Binge since DMC4 and Died his hair black caaauuuse? why would they change his look if they Put the "Original" Dante in MVC3? wouldnt that confuse customers that havent played DMC who buy the game due to seeing him in MVC3? Bad Capcom! Bad! No Treat for you!

It seems really badass and over the top, but i wish they didnt change the look of the character because Dante had such an iconic look. Although i will say that the new persona of Dante is very cool.

The worst part about it is I know this is Capcom's knee jerk reaction to DMC 4 getting lackluster reviews. The problem is that they only have themselves to blame for that because they decided they couldn't be bothered to code any new levels halfway through the game.

As long as I don't have to fight the same final boss 3 times I'm cool.
Also funny reading all the haters comments talking about the new "emo Dante"... While I respect your personal decision of hating the new design saying that you hate it "because the new emo look" is kind of absurd...
Dante is a dude with daddy issues, white hair, a red leather jacket and two weapons called Ebony and Ivory... I have bad new for you!
HE IS ALWAYS BEEN EMO!!
His attitude is the same one in this clip, he just got a hair cut, calm down people!

just a thought. Maybe this guy really isnt Dante, he just thinks he is. i mean, he is in a psyc ward. obviously the guy is trying to get him to say his REAL name. Maybe this guy is just insane and thinks he's Dante.
just a thought.

I want the old look. The white hair is a classic and change this is idiotice.

I'm not all too thrilled with the new look. DMC is all about stylish characters, cool attitudes, and over-the-top action. This reboot looks like it strips most of that away and wants to make Dante grimy and dingy, all the while keeping a cool persona. It seems like Capcom is giving Hideki Kamiya the finger for doing Bayonetta with Platinum Games (formerly Clover Studios, a Capcom owned division) and throwing his version of Dante out the window for THEIR version. I'd give this a chance, but I miss gray-haired Dante (ala DMC 3, the best in the series)!

I always liked DMC because of it's tight controls. Heavenly Sword, although a great cinematic gaming experience, did not have very tight controls. I'm worried about this reboot.

I'm looking forward to a new DMC game, just not to them changing the look of the main character... change his style, change his clothes, just don't change the way his face/hair looks. That's Dante... wise-ass smirk with white hair, plain & simple.
Why would you change an icon?
The Ninja Theory influence is clear to see with the Heavenly Sword style "chain-sword".

Well hopefully we'll see another entry in the original continuity another time. This does look cool, but I would hope they aren't totally abandoing the series. I loved the old Dante, with his willy corny jokes and aloof persona. Though maybe things will change this'll be another prequel.
SizzlewickMagicfart
really though, replace the young douche with a young dante and then this game will be great, other than that, i love the game but i think i won't be able to play it with this hilary swank looking "dante".
RandyMercer
I was Irate, earlier when I seen this earlier, however, now paying attention that this a younger Dante (apparently younger than DMC 3 Dante) I'm a tad bit more open. I'm watching you Capcom

OK the whole new Dante look, looks pretty cool but it's just not Dante. I appreciate them trying to bring back DMC but they should've kept his look, at least the white hair lol. But other then that everything looks amazing!
And an other thing. they said this games futures a younger Dante... But we already had DMC3 for that?????
chefmikala
The thing that makes DMC so amazing is/was Dante's iconic look. I love DMC and i own them all, except this one. Gameplay maybe outstanding and Graphics may be sick, but what good is it if you can't use that with the character that this game belongs too? I would rather never have another DMC than the teen angst driven emo Dante seen here. No thanks guys This is like remaking the image of Lara Croft into Barbie...Just not right, not at all.
Lord_Ruinous
The first DMC was great. I really enjoyed that game. The sequels proceeded to screw up the character of Dante. He went from badass to cartoony way too quickly. This reboot is much needed. I'm finally looking forward to another DMC game.
NeoWanderer18
Oh man... they really need to change his look. He just looks... horrible.
