“This may be the most surprising news of the evening,” Capcom R&D head Keiji Inafune said last night. And then he unveiled DMC: Devil May Cry, a reboot of the iconic hack-and-slash series. Inafune might have oversold it: A Devil May Cry sequel is not exactly a shock that’s going to turn the industry on its head.
Still, there were some unexpected twists in the details revealed at Capcom’s pre-TGS event. The first surprise was that yes, this is a reboot. That might be a wise decision given that the series that was starting to get a little gray around the ears—not to mention overshadowed by the God of War games that have built on some of Devil May Cry’s design cues.
Appropriately enough for this rejuvenating rebirth, DMC will star a younger Dante—one who, judging by the trailer that Inafune premiered last night, is dealing with some heavy baggage. The trailer cuts between two scenes. In one, a shackled Dante dangles from the ceiling in a dingy tiled room while an administrator from a “young offenders rehabilitation program” demands to know his name. Dante refuses to answer, but a glimpse of his eye tell us that his emotional state is vacillating between “furious” and “no, really, quite angry.” Cut to an exterior scene—presumably a gameplay demo—and our hero releases all that pent-up rage on a gang of demons who just happened to be in the wrong parking lot at the wrong time.
The second surprise was that the game is being developed by what seems to be a team of millions, with few of the names that you might expect. Chief among them is Capcom Entertainment, Inc., the company’s San Mateo, Calif., division that is taking the lead on this project.
“You may be saying, ‘Wait a minute, Capcom USA heading up a game? I’m not sure I like this idea,” Inafune said—with lead CEI producer Alex Jones standing right next to him, no less. “But over the last year,” Inafune continued, “my reach has expanded beyond Japan. I’m now head of global R&D. … Alex works directly for me.” You get the sense that Inafune is something of a control freak? Yeah, a little bit.

Jones has to coordinate a global operation that includes not only his own team in California and Inafune’s crew in Japan, but also Ninja Theory, the development house in Cambridge, England, that’s responsible for Heavenly Sword and the upcoming Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. There’s a lot of chefs in the kitchen, but Capcom executive Kideaki Itsuno said that the diversity of perspectives is a good thing: “One thing we’ve learned in working with Ninja Theory is that they have a good sense of ‘cool’ that we don’t have on our side.”
Whether the new Dante will be accepted as “cool” or not remains to be seen, but he is different. Gone is the gray-haired silver fox of previous Devil May Cry games, replaced with a younger model whose chest-baring T-shirt, low-hanging cigarette, and perma-scowl suggest a touch of emo.
If you fear change, don’t worry—“we want to keep the essence of the gameplay,” said Ninja Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades. Translation: Dante’s no wallflower. And this was evident in the trailer. For instance, that long, thin, oh-so-cool cancer stick dangling from Dante’s mouth? At one point, he puts it out in the eye of an approaching demon. And then he stretches out a massive tentacle to hurl a car at another group of hideous ghouls. So yeah, he might look a little Rufus Wainwright-y, but this new Dante isn’t going to be sulking over his chai tea at the corner café.
Inafune was cagey on release dates—“too early to talk about anything like that”—and likewise for expected platforms. It’s still early. If we see the game before 2012, that would be the biggest surprise of all.

sure the game is called DmC and im a big fan of there work but why after they made Devil May Cry 4 not so long ago not make a Devil May Cry 5. although the art work and game video looks stunning same with the music make dante a punk in a phycho place. why not contenue the story with dante and another mision. cause at the end of dmc 4 he broke through his own door?
The Nameless Monster
He doesn't look emo. He looks like a homeless. So i say homeless Dante is okay with me. Also it looks like he's trying to kick crack and was in detox but escaped, and those demons was just trying to stop him from scoring.

and for those who just gonna complain "Dante was born with white hair so nyahh nyaahhhh" Or "he doesnt have his iconic sword so nyaaah nyaaah" let me stress this to you this is a REBOOT so the previous story in the last game probably won't carry over this is a fresh start i think this is going to be a real good game

Ok im gonna get a lot of thumbs down for this comment because all of the "fanboys and girls in the audience" after looking at this trailer a couple times and the new of this dante I estimate his age between 16-19, 20 pushing it just on how fragile he looks in the chains and his overall appearance Now i thought to myself if dante was 17 years old after playing all the other games I think this would be an accurate depiction of him. I know his "iconic" look is legendary but if this game takes place in his extreme younger years then hell yeah he was an emo punk who smokes with dark hair dirty as hell and just as rebelious as most teens are. Whoever said that this character can never grow into the dante we all know is not really accepting the fact that when they say reboot that they might just go back to the begining of dante life. Eventually taking on all the traits we all know as our "Iconic Dante" So yeah if capcom takes that road to story telling then yes it is very very welcome in my book because after Devil may cry 3 thats where the story ended in my book

I am a gamer of various games, hence my name. One of my favorite all time series was Devil May Cry. I don't like this new Dante look. The game-play may still be the same, however, I feel they are making him to demonic. First of all his look, how can anyone think he is cooler now? He actually looks like he does drugs combined with smoking. I don't think he will live long enough to be the real Dante if this is a prequel. Second, the weapons. Ebony and Ivory shoot out purple?? Also, the melee weapon looks too fluid, not solid like Rebellion. I like the human original Dante where we can laugh to his funny comments and actions. If they don't change the look then at least change the name. I could live with another demon human like there was with Nero in Devil May Cry 4. I feel very saddened of seeing a big fan character of all video games be so changed.

they should have reboot dante into a black dude than this emo kid

Good god its the same mistake as infamous, he looks nothing like Dante... so you want to spit in our faces and do a reboot...sure why not i dont remember asking for one but go ahead. You want to make him look younger..fine I'll accept that too. BUT to change how Dante looks entirely as a character is where i draw the line... Anyone and i mean anyone could have done better concept art for a younger Dante then that, and from what I've noticed it seems in the fight scene theres some gray hair on a patch of his head. Watch Capcom do some stupid thing like "Oh well from all the stress he goes through from being emo in the game, it'll turn his hair gray. Thus making him look more like the other Dante" Im sorry but no if ur going to make such drastic changes just make that loser a whole new character entirely and call it DMC, you think just cause some people didnt like Nero its ok to change everything NO just make that Edward Collen looking fruit basket someone else AND dont insult us by calling him Dante
BKiid101
omg wow i cant believe it.. I hope the old dante will be playable!!
The_Dante_Sparda
Capcom has just torn out my heart by murdering one of the most iconic characters in videogaming... this stupid emo punk is nothing like the Dante Sparda and if anyone thinks he could ever come close, they need to actually play or even watch someone play DMC because they obviously have never seen the original Dante in action.
Ninja Theory, Capcom, you've ruined the Devil May Cry name... I'd like to see Dante not beat the crap out of you after this one
Change him back
The_Dante_Sparda
I can't believe Capcom has just ripped my heart out by calling some emo little punk Dante Sparda... personally... it doesn't matter to me if the gameplay is good or if the graphics are great because now, they've just trashed the Real Dante Sparda for some ugly kid who looks like he's anorexic...
Ninja Theory, Capcom... Dante would never be proud of this crap.

odds are capcom isnt gonna kill the golden goose and the character is just named dante
and this character is missing some of dantes fundemental elements like any of his weapons or his knecklace so its probably like his son
ryukenchi
this is a stupid idea/move by capcom dante is one of my favorite characters. if the game has been lacluster its because of the game makers doing a poor job with the story. so the game losing its flair is capcoms fault. DMC3 was just amazing i loved it.they dont need to reboot, they need to fire the developers at capcom and hire new ones. as proof that ppl still love dante he's going to be in the MVC3 game wth. is that a farewell? although we shouldve seen this coming since he wasnt the main character anymore in the 4th installment. seriously first infamous now this game. next thing you know they are gonna rebooit GOW , ratchet and clank and if theres gonna be a new MGS they are prolly gonna kill off snake and raiden and put in a new char.i think they really need to ask us what we think about a character overhaul instead off just assuming that we're gonna like it. WHICH IS NOT THE THE CASE EVER. 'those who fear change dont worry'? YOU KILLED OF OUR BELVOED DANTE AND CAME WITH THIS CIGARETTE SMOKIN EMO IDIOT. DANTE DIDNT EVEN SMOKE. i think im going to boycott this game. or they better only release this game in japan

These guys could have done three things. One reboot but keep Dante's original look and personality, A prequel to a prequel so people won't be too mad about the appearance, or set the timeline to at least 18 years where Devil May Cry 2 left off and made this guy a son of Dante or something. All I'm saying if you gonna make changes, make changes where it won't have to suffer a horrible death by the fans. The video was awesome though.
DevilslayerRijen
The video was badass but I don't like the idea to reboot the series. Plus this new version of Dante doesn't fit with his personality. This guy seems a little darker,....dirty shadow of Dante. It would make sense if this is a prequel to a prequel since us fan are pretty much use to it or they could have made it like this guy to be Dante's kid or distant relative. All I'm saying is if you're gonna make a reboot stick to the main character's appearance and attitude.
SomeSortofLazer
Honestly I love the red coast white hair Dante as much as the next badass loving guy. But I look at it as think about it, would the son of a demon look like a some guy who could be a model for a clothes company? I feel the new grittier "emo" look gives him some depth. I loved Devil May Cry 3 it was friggin epic and although some of Dante's dialogue was kind of bleh, I loved the fighting.
thesmokeydice
devil may cry was a great game for the one week i rented it. after that it became just a hack and slash mindless button mashing game to keep my mind busy while the dishes soak. revamping a character such as dante and going all star wars 1-3 with him instead of years down the road where maybe he has a kid of his own that he has to show the ropes of demon slaying to. nah, instead their gonna go all anakin skywalker teen angst years and show him all dark and brooding. hey capcom, stop beating that dead horse please. give us something fresh and new, take a chance, shoot for the friggin moon or just stop it.
symbiotehost
game looks good, Dante doesn't.
GobRazor
I personally think this is the right choice for Ninja Theory to do. They must reboot the series. You know why? because Capcom made a good game with a story so full of holes, doubts and inconsistency that Ninja Theory said: This is some kind of nonsense story. Let's make another one. So little DmC fans, stop trolling against this game and wait. What if Ninja Theory make a much better work? I'm not saying they will do it, but please, give them a chance.
GamerNow&Forever
I would want the old game look back as well but since this a reboot, I actually love everything they've done with it so far. Its going to be fun and hopefully back to the caliber of DMC 1 & 3. 2 & 4 were good but nothing compared to 1 and 3. I'm ready and looking forward to this. PS3 only hopefully
