Firefall Cinematic Trailer »

Firefall might just be the best-looking game that you've never heard of. Well, the main reason you haven't is because that it was just announced at PAX, so I'll take that into consideration and give you a break. This game was announced at PAX, and it seriously managed to impress. Both because of its looks, the gameplay, and the fact that it's going to be free. Yes, free.

You'll need to save your money for the "optional enhancements" to the game, which we hope don't become "necessary requirements."

"Firefall paints a beautifully devastating vision of Earth, 200 years in the future. The promise of a new clean energy source, Crystite, leads to the disastrous arrival of the Melding, a hostile energy storm that engulfs most of our home planet. Earth’s surviving humans must band together in the eye of the Melding storm to save our species. Unfortunately, a new danger emerges as a bloodthirsty race known as The Chosen threatens humanity’s survival."

Firefall is both team-based, and class-based, so you'll need to choose your style of play, and then begin customizing the wearable Battleframe that allows you to specialize in certain actions. Want to be a tank? Load up on armor. Is stealth more your style? Then you'll want to equip the proper tools and abilities.

Admittedly, we're always suspicious of free-play models, just because they tend to be lower on the quality ladder, but the cel-shaded graphics and gameplay of Firefall looks impressive so far. We'll get more to you as soon as we have it.

Even though Firefall is starting to get more publicity this video is one of the best in termes of what to expect from PvE gameplay and the maps UI view at the beginning is probably the only time I've seen it. there is a similar video floating around of the same footage but with developer commentary over the top, it's very informative. This game is sure to be a massive success and grow to be something huge in the years to come.

The cinematic trailer makes it look awesome. Too bad the gameplay feature video betrays the fact it's not anything remotely comparable to that in-game. I miss when games had their cinematics done entirely in-engine, with the same lighting, effects and detail, so you can see beforehand exactly what to expect from the visuals. Oh, wait - EPIC still does that with every one of their games.

I'll admit the WORLD graphics look decent, especially with the light blooming and "God beams", but that is immediately ruined by the cel-shaded characters, which promptly send all suspension of disbelief out the window.

Graphics aside, the game looks completely unoriginal and all the concepts here are absolutely uninspired. Okay, let me get this straight - you use the thumpers from Dune to attract the bugs from Starship Troopers so you can take off in the landing craft from Aliens? Wow. Just wow. If this were to bring something new to the table, like Brink is doing, I'd pay for it. I'll play since it's free, but as for the premium content? Forget it. Not unless I see this first show me something everyone else hasn't done already, and better.

They are wanting to put this on the console, I'm curious on who the publisher will be.

It looks like a really fun game. My only wish is that a game like that finds its way to consoles too.
