It's one thing for game developers to listen to their fans, but the makers of Guild Wars 2 are took that idea a step further by calling on fans to actually create part of their game. The company used their panel at Pax this year to invite the Guild War faithful behind-the-scenes of their development and letting them create an event chain for the upcoming game. Some version of the events voted on by Pax's panel-goers will end up in the finished game.
First off, the setting: Timberline Falls was chosen by popular consensus.
The Guild Wars 2 dev team then introduced a race to at the panel, the amphibious Quaggan. The Quaggan are a pacifist race of good-natured water dwellers, but if they are cornered, they transform into blood-thirsty killers. Later, when things are calm, the normally peaceful creatures feel great remorse for their lack of decorum. You could call them lovable, and the response from the crowd was understandably positive, so the Quaggan were chosen as the race the fan-created event-chain would center on.
Obviously a friendly race needs an antagonist, so the Quaggan have the Krait. After determining that the fan-created events would take place in Timberline Falls and involve the Krait harassing the Quaggan, the crowd threw out ideas for, how exactly, the events would transpire. Everything from a magically created giant shark to more standard slave rebellion scenarios were presented, but, as you might expect, the huge boss battle suggested by Mega-Shark won out, and the panel chose the creation of the shark as one of the main events in the chain.
The take-away: Look out for Mega Shark when Guild Wars 2 comes out. Speaking of which, take a look at the dry-erase board above. It contains the release date. See where it says "When it's done?" Bingo.
