Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer Reveal Hands-On

Important Hollywood actors Ed Harris and Gary Oldman will lend their vocal talents to Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops, the company announced this morning. Oldman will be revisiting the role of  Russian Red Army squad leader Viktor Reznov from Call of Duty: World at War, and Harris is playing CIA operative Jason Hudson, one of the game's main characters.

Another Hollywood pro onboard for Black Ops: David S. Goyer, writer of The Dark Knight  and Batman Begins, is providing script consultation.

"Their contributions have helped us to push the boundaries of our story telling and character development far beyond anything we have ever attempted before in the franchise," said Treyarch head Mark Lamia in a statement.

Press release hyperbole aside, there is no doubt that Oldman and Harris will give quality voice to their characters -- both have extensive credits of high profile, Oscar-nominated films under their belts -- but I'm curious about this: Do you care? If the main characters in the game were voiced by competent but unknown voice-over artists, would it matter to you? Let us know in our comment section!

I sit and watch my husband Play games all the time and enjoy hearing familiar voices. So far my favorite was picking out Seth Green on Mass Effect which had a good story line too. I am crap at playing games but some of them I really like to watch to see the story unfold. I'll be trying my hand at Dead Rising 2 when that comes out I figure the co-op mode will be therapeutic for my fear of zombies.

First Commissioner Gordon/Ned Flanders, and now one of the writers for Christopher Nolan's Batman... why not get everyone else to work on the game? (Or better yet, why not just have these guys make the movie?!)

But seriously, this has just about convinced me to change my mind and buy Black Ops.

The best thing I found in fallout 3 was finding out my dad was voiced by Liam Nesson. So I do care if I can recognize their voice.

I love you, Gary Oldman. You are one of the best actors - stage, screen, or voice - ever.

But I don't love you enough to play another Call of Duty game. Not after Modern Warfare 2. Sorry, Gary.

I will say this, both actors are amazing at their craft and to be able to enjoy another game featuring the legendary Reznov is a treat in its own. But to be honest I had no clue that Reznov was Oldman when I first played the game. When I did find out it was i didn't believe it til i checked it out cuz i cant hear his voice in there at all. That being said as long as the voice acting is good i could care less who it is. Just look at the first uncharted game, great voice acting and at the time the guy who did nathan drake was unknown, now he is in almost every game i play. In memory the only voice actor who actually made the role better cuz it was him was keifer sutherland in world at war. Just hearing Jack Bauer shouting out orders was pretty cool. Oh, also michael ironside forever owns the voice of sam fisher, had to be said.

I don't want to recognize the voice of a new character. I would rather hear a normal sounding voice actor, because that's what these characters are supposed to be to a certain degree. They are just soldiers, so they should just sounds like everyday people.

If their voice profile matches the character I am entirely for popular voices being used. However we all have seen some titles in the past that don't follow this principal which leads to irritation with that character. On the flip side I would pay an extra ten bucks for any Batman game rocking Mark Hamil as the Joker.

Personally I don't think it matters who voices the characters as long as they are good. Look at Mafia 2. When those credits rolled I didn't know 99% of the people who provided their voices, but damn were they all fantastic. It had some of the best voice acting in recent memory, and whoever voiced Joey needs a medal.

Having said that, Gary Oldman is a legend in my book and I would be honored to hear him voice any character in any game.

I agree with HiJaay... well except for the mayonnaise on french fries thing... I don't really care for famous voice actors, I care about GAMEPLAY. I'd rather have them spend the money on gameplay shizz instead of getting a famous person for the voice acting, especially in a game like CoD.

wow they are spending a bunch of cash on the voices! Alright, so am I to believe that there will be this in depth dialog in the story mode? Will we have to hear the inner workings of the poor sepcial ops soldiers? ITs ok as long as they dont make me feel sorry for them. Or is this purely the next step in gaming seriously high paid actors making almost a theatrical experience? Is it just for marketing reasons. Dont get me wrong Im not saying anything about the actors they are verry talented, but... wish they would ellaborate further it kinda makes me feel uneasy about it now. Metroid the other m just overflowed my pitty meter ok no more whinny games for me for a while.

Having famous artists voicing characters in-game is a great way to promote the game, imo. It's like eating french fries. I enjoy eating french fries, but with mayonnaise, it's even better. get it? i like mayonnaise.

Yeah there are a lot of actors out there that are terrible with voice acting. But Activision (can't believe I'm praising them for ANYTHING) tend to do a great job picking out voice actors and Hollywood actors for their games (Kiefer, Oldman, now Ed Harris)

All that they're missing is James Kahn and Tom Selleck!!

Billy West (if you have ever watched cartoons in your life you ought to know who that is) said that it better when actual voice actors are used over movie stars as voice actors have to be more versatile to fit into a character as where movie stars would have the character fit them (see Jerry Seinfeld's character in Bee Movie). The thing with Gary Oldman and Ed Helms though is that while they are famous they are great actors who fit into their characters and not vice versa. But when I read that David Goyer was writing it I could honestly care less who the voice actors where because now I'm buying this game anyway.
