PAX 2010: Duke Nukem Forever Reveal »

It finally happened. Don’t ask us what demonic forces had to be appeased to bring it about, but we just finished up a hands-on session with Gearbox Software’s newly revealed, and long, long, long awaited balls out shooter Duke Nukem Forever. Kevin Kelly sent back his impressions from the show floor at PAX Prime 2010. Here’s a taste:

"After they finish their attack plan "Which is basically, 'go get him'", you're able to run into the corridor outside, or do a little exploring. I found that you could actually go to the whiteboard and pick up different colored markers to design your own piece of art. Who figured there would be an artistic section to the game? When I finally backed away from the board, one of the soldiers in the room appraised my battle schematic and said 'If we had done that, that guy would still have his arm. And at least one of his balls.' Nice."

Check out Kevin's full Duke Nukem Forever hands-on impressions here.

That's definitely cool but that was all the information you managed to glean from playing the game? Or are you just being stingy with the details?

Does the comments section seem more messed up than usual to anyone else or am I the only one getting more than the normal amount of weird glitches?

@whitewoldassasin: he did not attack abbie bases solely on her opinion of Other M and she stated a hell of a lot more in her review then that she did not like how Samus was portrayed and that she felt it was a departure fromt he character we grew up with.

as for Duke Nukem. Teamfortress 2 had a very long development cycle, it started in 1998 at the latest and it is still regarded by many fps enthusiasts as the best online shooter currently on the market. google best online shooters, and you will see tf2 in almost every list and on the top of quite a few of them. So to say that because Duke Nukem started in 1997 that it can't compete with modern fps's outside of a nostolgia factor is complete BS.

@crocodilius: How dare you attack Abbie based soley on her opinion of Metroid: Other M. She mearly stated that she did not like how Samus was portrayed and felt that it was a departure from the character we grew up with. Samus has been always portrayed as a stong female characters and it just felt out of place in the way she was portayed in Other M.

How good can this game actualy be after a decade of development, delay and swithching of studios. I don't doubt Gearbox's talent, but the fact is that FPS have greatly evolved since the days of Duke Nukem. This is the kind of the game that harkins back to the steroid induced, over the top action movies of the early 90's. Despite the Expendables success, I seriosly doubt that kind of entertainment will ever be as relevent and popular as back then. The one of the keys to success will be the nostalgia factor, but it will be hard to imagine that it can compete with the new generation of FPS.

as a pc gamer and fan of Duke Nukem, i am a little worried about gearbox picking it up... the last game of theirs i played was Borderlands. While Borderlands was a great concept for a game and was fun to play, the port to the pc was a pretty bad one...

I feel with Gearbox at the helm this game stands a little better chance of living up to its hype. That said, with out seeing the game I have no clue what its deal is going to be. However, I am excited to see Duke in a new game.

I think that a decade of hype is over kill for a game... it will probably be fun but may not meet the expectations that years of waiting will bring.
