We hang on every word Valve says. When you're the company behind Half-Life, Left 4 Dead and Portal, you earn that kind of attention. Well, in a recent interview, Valve head Gabe Newell said we can expect at least three big surprises in the coming year.
"I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn't going to stop any time soon. I'm just laughing because... people will be shocked again," Valve boss Gabe Newell told PC Gamer. "We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least."
I wouldn't be at all surprised at the announcement of Half-Life 2: Episode 3 this year. In fact, I'd be surprised if it wasn't announced... does this mean the non-announcement itself is one of the three surprises? No one can say, but whatever Valve ends up revealing, you can bet we'll tell you about it the second we hear anything!
As always, feel free to speculate in our comment section.

I think the if Half-Life 2 episode 3 doesn't get announced by the end of 2011, the Steam forums are going to kidnap and take Newell hostage. Just a theory.

If it's just a bunch of non-surprises like their lame E3 announcement, I'll be ticked.
if ANY of these announcements have anything to do with Left 4 Dead, I'll boycott Valve until they actually announce HL2:Ep3 or HL3.
Actually, I'd probably boycott if this turns out to be another "HEY WE'RE RELEASING X GAME TO PS3" thing like their last "surprise."
At this point, though, I don't think any of us would accept none of those announcements being Half-life related.
Listen to your fans, Gabe: Screw the zombies in L4D, we need Gordon Freeman and we need Gordon Freeman now!
Oh, also, I hope one of those "surprises" is a Linux Steam/Source port.

Half life 3. Some news about an updated steam engine, and a new nonshooter franchise, because they want to broaden their genres (The nonshooter being the biggest surprise).

You guys are all missing something very important...
Everyone guessing is placing their bets on three games.
I'd bet that the 3 surprises are 2 games plus expanded Steam Cloud support, possibly even Steam being added to more platforms like PS3 and XBox 360. Sure, that's unlikely (especially the 360...) but that sure would be surprising, wouldn't it?

I don't think Portal 2 is going to be a surprise, since everyone already knows about it. I'm going to guess.
HL2: Episode 3
eithier Left 4 Dead 3, or more DLC for 1&2
longshot, Team Fortress 3

Im thinking:
1. Something to do with the new Portal 2
2. Left 4 Dead 3
3. Half Life 3 or Half Life 2 episode 3
4. New IP that will blow peoples minds
5. Acquisition of a major company or IP
6. E3- attend and win best of show over everyone with releases (games, dlc, etc) that beats everything from everyone.

Left for Dead 3 please?????

1. Gabe Newell is honest with the Valve customers.
2. Half Life 2, Ep 3
3. Half Life 3

I'm hoping for The Orange Box 2! Hopefully it will include Half-Life 2: Episode 3, Portal 2, and the Left 4 Dead trilogy (assuming that there is a Left 4 Dead 3)

I love Valve, but they've been getting on my nerves for the last couple of years. I know they make quality products and I appreciate that they take time to make quality games, but their last couple of "big announcements" have been like Apple's- making minute upgrades to existing products instead of giving us innovation. Why tease us and say "there's gonna be big announcements" when you can tell us when the time comes. Generate that hype machine, Gabe. That said, here's my predictions:
1) Look at Gordon's HEV suit- Ricochet: Source!
2) HL1 update: now with steam achievements!
3) Valve picked up Duke Nukem Forever and is releasing it "when it's ready".

I don't want to see HL2 EP2, I want to see HL3 in 2011. Its been quite awhile since episode 2 and kinda lost interest since its been so long, would rather buy a full game not 3-4 hours, basically you start finding your rhythm and then the episode ends and have to wait 6-12 months for the next, not cool.

New counter-strike, all the TF2 updates available for the PS3, some prequel to Half-life. Why Didn't I say HL3/ ep.3? Because while everything Valve turns out is unicorn poop (magical and full of wonderment), I have given up hope of ever seeing the continuation or completion of the series in my lifetime. I would be more surprised if they decided to release all the updates for TF2 at a price, given their release of Portal 2 for the PlayStation. And who would see counter-strike coming? Its been a bit since the game was dropped, imagine what they could do with it now.

#1... After the next L4D 1/2 DLC in October, a future update will finally bring the two games together where 1 and 2 players can play together, as was initially "promised." Will also include 10-20 new campaigns.
#2... Valve hires the Black Mesa team and releases their just-can't-finish work as Half-Life: Past Glory.
#3... There will be a complete 20-30 hour Half-Life 3 game, instead of a measly "episode," and will include the return of true boss battles. However, they state it will only be released after Duke Nukem Forever is, as to not hurt eachothers' sales.

After having a war within my own mind, I have decided to err on the side of cynicism: L4D 3, 4, & 5.
Seriously, I just don't think all these CoD-folk (imagine racist, fish-headed eleven year olds) will get behind Half Life now. They think it's their Dad's game series. One look and they'll say, "No zombies or Aiming-down-the-sight? Screw That!" Valve really can't expect people other than "us," the fans, to come to the series if there is so much space between games. They clearly know this; look at what they've done with Left 4 Dead. Those mutations are the exact antithesis of the way they handle Half Life. I don't have a point, much less any suggestions for Valve, who owe me nothing, so I guess I'll just wallow in my cynicism until HL3 graces us with Its Holy Presence.
SilentFan311
I'm thinking the surprises may not have anything to do with their established franchises. Possibly a L4D PS3 title, maybe L4D3 being multiplatform. Aside from that, perhaps a new IP or two? One can only hope!
