Halo: Reach Trailer Unveils Multiplayer Gameplay

We already know that Halo: Reach will allow players to customize their armor in multiplayer. For me, that's going to mean slapping on a coat of neon pink paint and hitting start, but others are going to be way into making their Spartan look amazing. Today, we learned about some of the most interesting, hardcore "special effects" that can be added to armor... If you're willing to put in the time to earn them.

There will be four effects available at launch, with more to come:

  • Grunt Birthday Party (Cost: 100,000 Credits): Player's head explodes in confetti when killed with a headshot.
  • Hearts (Cost: 200,000 Credits): When the player dies, hearts appear around his/her body.
  • Pestilence (Cost: 1,000,000 Credits): Player's armor constantly radiates a dark cloud of insects.
  • Lightning (Cost: 2,000,000 Credits): Player's armor constantly radiates electricity.

Sound pretty cool? I thought so too, but Bungie's not giving out those credits for nothing. It's going to take time. MTV's game writer Russ Frushtick estimates that he earned about 500 credits for each multiplayer match he played, so in order to crackle with electricity, a player will have to play in 4,000 matches (give or take). That's a serious commitment.

I'm going to stick with my hot pink armor, I think.

What about you? Who among you is hardcore enough to earn the most elite armor?

They will take a long time to unlock, but you also have to realize that he wasn't completing daily/weekly challenges or using Forge.

Those effects will take along time to unlock, but there will be was to gain more credits than have been revealed I'm sure.

Also, I can just see Bungie replacing Double XP weekends with Double Credit weekends.

It'll actually take a lot less games than 4,000 since there are challenges, commendations and if you play well you get a lot more.

I really dont like these cod fanboys talking smack about halo. halo is ten times more fun, the story is way better then cod, as a matter of fact the cod story was pretty stupid. I beat it in 5 hours and spec ops wasnt the best, and the multiplayer sucks, no team work at all, and team deathmatch feels like team free for all.Its sad cod fanboys wont ever know what it feels like to send a guy to get a flag then have a get away warthog (puma) waiting then have the whole game go crazy as the other team chases you down in a banshee and jump out your puma before it explodes take the grav lift to your flag and score and feel like you just punched mike tyson in the face.

Lighting is totally worth 4,000 games. Thank you Bungie for putting something totally awesome in a game. Also hope theres a good amount of Easter eggs in the Campaign.

You're forgetting about Double EXP weekends, possibly x3 and x4. I bet a skilled player can get it much faster than 4000 games.

Also, there are the daily and weekly challenges that can take place online and in the campaign and I bet they award a pretty penny for completing them.

500 credits a match. 4,000 credits for an armor effect.

    4,000/500 = 8

That's only eight matches for a new armor effect. Not what I would call a "serious commitment."

Its neat, but its going to give you away completely in multiplayer. You wont be able to hide very well if theres a cloud of insects or bolts of lightning all around you. Just like Bungie's flaming "headpiece" chestplate being a double-edged sword; sure you look cool, but those flames are just screaming "HEY, SHOOT ME IN THE HEAD!"
