Sequels are nothing new, but the topic has come up quite a bit recently, and it got me thinking about something in particular, and that is first installment revisitation. By that I mean, going back to play the first game in a series only after the sequel has come out. Oftentimes people miss games when they’re first released and for one reason or another they just never get around to playing them, but then the sequel comes out, and they feel compelled to revisit the first game.
With so many high profile sequels, and even threequels coming out over the next few months, this situation is bound to come up for a number of gamers. So what I want to know is what have been some sequels that have compelled you check out the previous title in a particular series? Has there been a case where you've preferred the original game to the sequel?

I'm surprised that this hasn't come up. KOTOR II: The Sith Lords. I played that one first then went back and Played KOTOR I. This was defiantly a case where the first game was better then the second.

Sequels are great! It allows developers to go back and really polish an already great (tried and true) blockbuster game. COD4 was great, but MW2 made it even better. Gears of War was great, but GOW2 was refined. We need new IPs, certainly, but sequels fill the gaps while waiting for the next great IP game.

When Bioshock 2 came out I finally felt the need to play Bioshock. I've put in about 5 hours or so on the game and am still having trouble getting into it. I just don't get it. Maybe its the art design, maybe its that I feel like all I do is kill zombies. Maybe its that hacking a robot or vending machine takes forever even after you've put all the connections together. It just seems like a mishmash that doesn't quite come together for me. I hope it gets better later but I"m not sure I'm going to give it the chance before giving up.

Im going to plunk down the 30 bucks for Infamous pretty soon. Ive been meaning to get to it anyway and should play it before the fall glut of games comes. Also I keep waiting to play the Fallout 3 DLC for PS3 but there STILL hasnt been a price reduction. Love the game as I do I'm not paying $50 for expansion levels I heard were buggy. Cmon price break before New Vegas.

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 made me wanna check out the original, as did Ratchet and Clank 2. i thought the 1st Bioshock was much better than 2. it was a lot freakier on my 1st tour of Rapture than my 2nd. the game also had a stronger plot. Metroid Prime was better than Echoes, as it felt like a more serious and intense game.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 was much better than Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.
I liked Fable 1 better than Fable 2 but honestly both games are excellent. it's like 1.A and 1.B.
I Think i liked the first Lost Planet better than the 2nd one but now the 2nd one has grown on me.
The only Time i have played a part 2 of a game without playing the part one is Battlefield Bad Company 2. or at least in recent memory..
then when Uncharted 2 came out i made sure i played the first uncharted a month before the 2nd came out.

I had to play Mass Effect before the sequel came out and I absolutely loved it and prefer over Mass Effect 2 in fact I was a little disappointed that they had taken out so many of the RPG elements and had turned it into more of an RTS. Marvel Ultimate Alliance was better story wise than 2 and had many more extras such as costumes. Star Wars KOTOR was definitely better than its predecessor.

I'm somewhat obsessive compulsive when it comes to game series. If a sequel looks good, but I didn't play the first, I feel I have to at least try the original. Most of the time I buy into a series from day one, but there are rare times where I rent the original only to buy it much later due to a sequel.
I bought Dead Space last December to replay in anticipation of the sequel and the release of God of War Collection allowed me to revisit the series before picking up the third. If Bioshock Infinite is cool, maybe I'll add Bioshock to my collection and give them a replay.

although I'd have to say that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion had the same effect on me. I played that and immediately went and Played the first 3 Elder Scrolls. So far I'd have to say that ES3: Morrowind is the best of them, story wise, but graphics and gameplay.... ESIV: Oblivion has them all beat.

For me it was the Zelda series. When the first Zelda was released, I was more into arcade type games and of course Mario. I didn't pay much attention to the early Zelda games because someone told me they were RPG games which I didn't like at the time. So I avoided them until Ocarina of Time was released. I was surprised how action/puzzle oriented it was and so I went to play the previous titles. I couldn't believe how misinformed I was. I will say that when Majora's Mask was released, I went back to replay Ocarina of Time just to see the differences between the two.

I have to agree with missingno4. I've been playing Fallout 3: GOTY that game alone has made me want to play fallout and fallout 2. Now that Fallout: New Vegas is coming out, you really have to play the first 2 games, because alot of the backstory of new vegas can be traced to them.

Half Life 2 got me to track down Half Life 1 and its expansions.

Condemned 2 made me pick up the first, and I've realized how much scarier the first is.
Final Fantasy X had the opposite effect on me, to never play another Final Fantasy game ever again.

When I first got my PS3 from my girlfriend, everyone told me to get Uncharted 2 because it won all the awards and got such praise. So I decided I would but I need to know the story and went out to buy Drake's Fortune. The game was excellent but once you hit the part where you take on 'alien' type enemies, I lost all respect for the game. I thought it was going realistic the whole time then BAM, it pulled an Indiana Jones on me. This dissatisfaction with the first made me not get the second, but made me buy possibly my favorite game on the PS3, God of War 3.
@JDarkley Amen to that brother. Halo 1, even without online matchmaking, was the best example of what a FPS should be. If it had the matchmaking system Halo 2 came with, there would still be die hards playing it now, me included. The first 2 Halo's were: the definition of skill gap/fun FPSs, and revolutionized the online aspect of playing FPSs.

I played through Splinter Cell: DA before I picked up Conviction. After doing that I felt that Conviction was pretty much a Splinter Cell game made for people who hate Splinter Cell. The difference is rather jarring. As for prequels that are better than their sequels, I still think Halo 1 is better than any Halo game that has come out since. Here's hoping Reach changes my mind.

I heard that about Origins also, Trikkey. But I actually loved the game and finished it, and because I didn't talk to every single villager my first time through, my total time was only around 35 hours. That doesn't lead to much "good" parts.
I'm wondering if they mean that the plot gets good after thirty hours, but all plots get better as they go along. What's more, I knew the plot was going to get better, so I was in no rush to see some awesome crap happen. I'm sure those guys who say things like this would be bored of the first ten hours of Star Wars: the Game because Luke's just piddling around on Tatooine. "Archetypes, Schmarchetypes, where's my trash-compactor?!"

Missingno4
