Amidst the chaos of running around Gamescom, I actually had a few seconds to sit down this morning, and what did I do with my time? Well, I stopped by the Portal 2 booth yesterday, and was handed a Steam promotional card that said “Two Free Games” (pictured above) and included a download voucher on the back. I had wanted to find out what the code was for yesterday, but didn’t have time. Back to the whole “had a few seconds this morning” thing.
I just redeemed the code, and as I was doing so, I jokingly said to myself, “Self, wouldn’t it be funny if the code was actually for Half-Life 2: Episode 3?” Obviously, it wasn’t. But I wasn’t far off, as the code was actually for Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast!
Like most people reading this right now, I obviously don’t need another copy of HL2 (I have it installed on two computers and I have the Orange Box), but I still felt compelled to share with you that Valve is currently giving away one of the greatest games of all time for free to anyone who stops by their booth. I’ll try to snag a few more cards over the next few days and maybe we’ll do a little contest to hand them out. We’ll see.
Anyway, just thought you’d like to know in case you needed yet another reason to love Valve. Now back to the show. Auf wiedersehen!

It's a 6 year old game. It should be free.

OMG I want something for free but ONLY if you do it the way I want it done .
They should just give me all the games I want for free because I deserve it .
You better give me the game I want the way I want it and right this minute or your game(s) will never again have the privilege of crossing my PC/Console.
If you go look in every gaming forum out there, whether it be dev s forums, gamer news forums, or fanboy forums, you will find the most narcissistic, greedy, arrogant people out of any community out there. Gamers for some reason, think the sun rises and sets on their opinions. And their wants and needs come before anybody else s. I love how they threaten dev s if you don t do what I want when I want it, I will never buy your games again ; all while totally bashing the game and the people that made it. This wouldn t be such an issue as in everything in life always has their whacko s, but for some reason in the gaming community it is the rule and not the exception.

Just need to be patient on Ep3 sadly, Half Life is so revered that anything short of perfection is not going to be released until it's 100% ready.
@Jhud, you should ask around your friend list on Steam, a lot of people still have free copies that they can gift away, it can be quiet difficult finding someone on steam that hasn't got HL2 already >.<</safety_wrapper&g t;

See thats how you treat your fans that is another win for Valve.

Damn, Gabe is such a bro. I don't care if he doesn't release HL EP3 for now, cause I bet they're making it as awesome as they can. They may even be developing a new version of the Source Engine just for it.
So, take your time Gabe-bro!
Just make sure it's fantabulous!

Awesome! Man, I would love if you guys did a contest to win them on the website! Just please do not force us to go to Twitter of Facebook, since plenty of the people who read this site don't gave a hoot about those websites. Too many sites force its users to go to a secondary website to win something. It always made me laugh that they were alienating the fans who come to their site and don't care about posting their entire life on a website like FACEBOOK.

HL2 was ok but severely crippled with the Steam virus. I wanted to enjoy the game but the headaches caused by the malware bundled with it just took all the fun away. So even if these games were available for free I don't think I want to go through those problems again. Not worth it for a round 2 of battling and removing Steam.

Valve you guys are the best n_n

I have never had Half Life 2 for the PC and it would be so cool if they just made it where anyone could log on steam and Down Load it for free during this thing. I tried to play it on the 360 but felt like it should be on PC only and never finished it , but now I have a PC that can run it but really cant buy any new games right now lol :s

i've heard both that the HL2 episodic games were going to be the finisher to the series (in which case Ep. 3 needs to be HUGE to finish the story out properly and answer all the questions that this series has left gamers with for over the last decade and a half.) or that the trilogy was going to lead into a Half-Life 3 full game. Valve needs to pull their overinflated heads out of the hind ends and realize that the fan base that was into the original half life IP, which LAUNCHED THEIR COMPANY!!!!!, are now getting into so many other new and good original IPs that when they get around to releasing the new games its going to flop because of the fanbase lost

Valve should just make Ep. 3 into Half-Life 3.
UnJakeable
all I got to say is give my ep3

I agree with you SirCitadel, enough is enough already. Look I get it Valve you are a great bunch of guys, ok? Just stop with the PR and nice cutesy stuff and get to producing your game. If you are too busy raking in the cash from your source engine then let someone else get Half-Life 3 out to the public. What is the REAL story with this game? Does only one person in the company actually have ownership to its IP and only they work on it? It sure seems that way. Your release schedule for the Half Life series would fit the single programmer format!
Like SirCitadel I've seen you (as a company) invest large amounts of time on creating and promoting every type of game BUT Half Life 3 with the promise that it will be worth the wait, but you know what? The difference between the original Half Life and the following sequels wasn't THAT great considering the lag in release dates.
All I hear from the gaming community is how 'gamer friendly' Valve is, but you know what at least Activision gets its game out on time (you have no idea how hard it was for me to compliment that company).
Hope you read this Valve, I really do.

IT'S OFFICIAL HALF-LIFE 2 EP3! I may have lost my credibility because of these so called Half-Life 2 Ep3 teaser announcements, but this time they will announce it.

If people haven't played it by now they should be locked up!

i dont have half life 2 yet
SirCitadel
i love valve, truly i do. but the pending release of ep. 3 has greatly tested my patience. i mean, this IS my favorite gaming series - yet now, i cant look at valve without getting a bad taste in my mouth. everyone keeps telling valve to take their time, because ep. 3 is going to be worth the wait, ...but is it? valve keeps doing stuff like this - giving games away for free, releasing quirky articles online for us to giggle at - all of this in order to 'have another reason to love valve' - well im not smiling anymore.
i know i dont owe them anything, but where is this episode they promised us? you know, because breaking them up into episodes was suppose to help release the game more frequently? if i didnt know for certain that they were working on ep. 3, i probably wouldnt be so mad, but that fact that this has been the plan since the beginning makes me quite cross.
and before you thumb me down, you have to understand that this is coming from someone that could never get into left 4 dead (odd since i love to hate zombies). so since the orange box in 2007 - ive watched valve start a new franchise, release dlc's for it, a sequel to that game as well as dlc, port the entire valve catalog to mac, and now give the release date and show off the sequel to one of the games that was also in the orange box, portal. all of this, without a single screen shot of a crowbar wielding scientist. if one more e3 goes by without an update on the situation, i fear i may forget what valve's warm embrace feels like...
been wanting to get that off my chest. thank you.
