Blizzards Reveals New Diablo III Details

Before you get your hopes up, just realize that it's not a new class or a release date. At least, that's what I was hoping they'd reveal. I imagine they're saving the big stuff for BlizzCon in October, but that doesn't mean that today's announcement was boring. There's some nifty intel in here, straight from Jay Wilson, game director on Diablo III who revealed the new features for the title at Gamescom.

Blizzard is adding two new aspects to the game: a caravan that follows you around through all of the areas, and an artisan system that provides NPCs who can craft and enchant things for you. Basically, it's a load of groupies with mad skills. There will be three different artisans available: blacksmith, mystic, and jeweler, and they'll help you create more badass gear, or tweak what you already have.

If you thought Diablo was a loot whore game at heart before, wait until you hear about this. Read on for more details, and we'll be back with some more highlights soon, including screenshots and a video.

Blizzards Reveals New Diablo III Details

What is the caravan?

The caravan is a persistent group that follows the heroes across Sanctuary, providing a centralized hub for players to find questgivers, crafters and other important NPCs. As your character moves through the world so too will your loyal band, setting up in specific locations to remain close by should you need them.

Who are the artisans?

In order to access the professions in Diablo III, you'll need gain the loyalty of various artisans through your travels in Sanctuary. The blacksmith, mystic and jeweler each provide unique service over the course of the game.

What do the artisans offer?

Skilling up your artisans will unlock unique recipes, granting your character access to benefits that may not be found anywhere else in the world.  The blacksmith crafts weapons and armor, and can add sockets to some items.  The mystic creates scrolls, potions, magical weapons, spell runes, charms, and can also enchant items. The jeweler crafts gems, amulets, and rings. The jeweler can also remove gems from items and can combine gems to improve their quality.

How do I find the artisans?

Finding the artisans will be part of the main quest. Each artisan has been fleshed out to include their own story and quest line.

How do I use the artisans?

You'll collect loot as a reward for slaughtering the forces of the Burning Hells. Unwanted items can be salvaged in your inventory, converting these goods into raw crafting materials. High level items are salvaged into high level materials. You’ll then take those raw materials and hand them over to the artisans, putting them to work crafting or enchanting for you. Upon returning to the caravan after a lengthy foray, you foray, you may find that the artisans have been hard at work playing their trade for youe benefit.

How do I salvage my items?

Players will find an item while progressing through the main quest that will allow them to convert unwanted gear into crafting materials from the inventory. This item will not take up any inventory space. This should be a more satisfying option for offloading unwanted loot than the alternative -- dropping things on the ground or making frequent trips to a vendor.

(Editor's note: this item, while cube-shaped, is sadly not the Horadric Cube from Diablo's past. According to Jay Wilson, it's meant to be an homage of sorts to that cube, but it isn't the same cube.)

Why are you including crafting professions in an action game?

Professions add depth to the item collection that drives the action of Diablo III. We want to provide players with an alternative way to acquire gear, potions, and other randomly found items. We also want to provide additional forms of customization for players -- adding jewels, enchants or sockets to existing gear allows players further characters. Many rare crafting recipes and materials only found as world drops, enhancing the item acquisition process by increasing the diversity of items dropped by monsters.

Unless thi comes out on consoles, I'n not interested. I am not buying more pc games just to find out i have to upgrade my dam pc yet again. Its getting too costly. If other developers can put their games to consoles and make them awesome, then I expect Blizzard to move in that direction and keep up with the changing demands of gamers. Otherwise, they will find themselves in a dying market. MAKE THIS FOR CONSOLES!!!!!

The sad thing is we have waited so damn long for a sequel to Diablo and Starcraft that they better live up to our expectations or I'll never buy anything released on those franchises again.

There's one thing that's been bugging me. Are the Artisans going to be accessible to everyone in the game? I mean, with D2, you created a game and the world is shaped by the quests you've finished. For example, rescuing Cain. If you've rescued Cain, he's walking around in the world and people can't do the quest but can talk to him and stuff. Will that be the same with the Artisans? If you have, say, a leveled up Artisan, can you still access him if you join a game where the guy just started? Or if the guy who just started join your game access your leveled up Artisan? Or...would the Artisan be unique to each player, like the loot, and everyone has access to their own artisan and can't see other people's artisans?

I've noticed a little bit of a strange pattern here... Shoulderpads and Leggings... Skill bar instead of potions.... Artistic reboot in a more colorful fashion.... Hey, wait a minute!

this is such a great progression on what the Charsi character did for you in D2. This is why Blizzard is Blizzard and of course we all know Diablo>WoW>Starcraft.

So, to sum up today's lesson: Diablo is greater than Warcraft which is greater than Starcraft.

Now all we need is a cloth-dye system so that every character will look different!

or everyone will use black because their 'dark' and 'mysterious'

I never played a Diablo game but this looks interesting, I'll definitely be checking it out. And I'm also reading people skipping out on Starcraft 2...*cough*Idiots*cough*

I think that D3 looks good in the same way that SC2 does. I imagine it'll be very polished, but I'm not sure that it's really doing anything new. I loved D2, but that was 10 years ago.

I don't have a problem if people want the retro experience, but I think a lot of games today are focusing too much on the virtual accomplishment through items and not enough on creating something new and focusing the players on having fun from the actual game play.

I'm hoping to see something new and exciting at Blizzcon in relation to the un-announced MMO. Blizzard really needs a new franchise.

Now if only they release a class that's worth playing..... This had better be awesome after the long wait. If it isn't, I'm done with Blizzard. I skipped Starcraft 2 for a myriad of reasons. Diablo 3 is the final litmus test for me. If it fails, Blizzard goes on the list with Ubisoft, Gas Powered Games, and all the others I won't drop another dime on.

I am skipping SC2 and going straight to D3, unless they going to say D3 will be in 3 parts...

LOL that is funny, I wish they say something like "D3 is going to be so big we broke it into 3 parts and 3 different worlds the first world is this...... etc.... after a year our development team will have the second world for you with new monsters and new characters and new story... it will be a whole new game and if you happen to have the first part well then it will be better because now your current character can be transfer to this new game with all his levels and items with a story line unique to what your character has done in the previous game....."

This is me *takes gun and blows head*

But it could be just like D2 and with a expansion which is cool for me.... :D

Sorry I am a hater since i am a gamer....
