Mouse-clickers, beware! Microsoft is charging back into the PC gaming space, according to a press release we received at Gamescom. Leading that charge will be a new, revamped Microsoft Flight Simulator, now shortened to Microsoft Flight, and the return of a real-time strategy classic in Age of Empires Online.
"With more than 20 million copies sold worldwide, the Age of Empires series redefined real-time strategy games for Windows-based PC players. Now, the timeless franchise once again invites players to experience its rich storyline in new ways. Age of Empires Online will invite players to create a living, growing online world, shared with friends and friendly rivals around the globe. Begin the journey with your own Greek civilization, and watch as it progresses from a village to an empire. Embark on quests along the way, alone or with friends, and immerse yourself in epic tales, quirky characters, adventure, history and strategy. "
- A persistent online capitol city that lives and grows even when you’re offline
- Cooperative multiplayer quests, trading and a level-based system that lets you progress at your own pace
- Fun, approachable style and storylines
- Free-to-play experiences via Games for Windows – LIVE

When I first saw this, I was so excited. Then I quickly became disappointed once I realized that it wasn't a F2P version of the older AoE's with improved online play. Oh well.

I saw the MechWarrior MMO .... I believe they are now going back on the BattleTech name on the table top... I vote we scratch off these pretenders and play either a MechWarrior MMO or BattleTech MMO... or both!

I, for one, will reserve judgment until I play the game. Its free to play so why is everyone hating. It is a different reiteration of the game. I think it has potential; I remember wasting hours of my life playing against my friends via a LAN so an online game should be the shiz. Also where s my MechWarrior MMO???!!!

I know a lot of people are going to attack Microsoft because they're the easy target, but Robot Entertainment had to design this. Just knowing the history of Ensemble Studios I know they were under pressure for making games on XBOX as well and/or (who knows?) making their one franchise more accessible on the PC to make money from Microsoft. Ensemble Studios still remains one of my most favorite development studios as a kid since I've played every single "Age" game so I might be a little bias, but I think it's exciting just to see the franchise return with or without a new art style. I am a little sad to see Ensemble/Robot milking the Greek cow again by using the Greek Civilization AGAIN! Really now? What about the Huns, or any of the other hundreds of civilizations?

Well, it looks like AoE has been throughly butchered.

God, I got soo excited hearing this. I still remember playing Galactic Battlegrounds, which was entirely based on the Age of Empires engine. It was my first RTS...ah the memories.
Also, Age of Mythologies was fun too, eh?

Interesting *strokes beard* If it's anything like AoE2 then I'm game, AoE3 not so much.

You kidding me? First you destroy Ensemble, then you trivialize my cherished RTS series into some game for kiddies and try to resurrect some abomination of a game and call it Age of Empires! Blasphemy!

This has me pretty excited. I used to love playing this with my buddies. Hopefully they can re-capture the fun that they had in the original
