In a brief statement on its website, SC Game World announced S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. The Sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat has no subtitle yet, but will be out in 2012 (if the world doesn't end). SC Game World promises a "completely new multi-platform technology" will make up the core of the game.
"After the official sales of the series exceeded 4 million copies worldwide, we had no doubts left to start creating a new big game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe. This will be the next chapter of the mega-popular game players expect from us," said Sergiy Grygorovych, CEO of GSC Game World in a statement.
I didn't get a chance to play the original, but I hear good things -- X-Play gave it a four out of five stars -- so I'm using this announcement as a chance to revisit the original. What about you? Did you play S.T.A.L.K.E.R? What did you think?

So bitComposer is not making this STALKER game? I gotta admit, that fact kinda makes me disappointed.

SoC was Great for being a hobby driven development (GSC employees on their own time), with flaws, but eventually most got patched.: 4 / 5
CS was so bad (broken AI that was never fixed) they fired most of the management (including the Project Lead), and the fact that they just added one sad map to the SoC maps means I gave it a 1.5 / 5
CoP was better than CS but with still lacked the atmosphere that they promised to return to the series after the CS fiasco. This is coupled with the fact that there are only three large maps. The first is fully detailed (compared to SoC standards), the second only half-done, and the third is just pathetic considering we already had a much larger Pripyat map in SoC with about 10X the explorable area (most of the buildings could be entered). Combined the CoP maps only give about 1/3 the explorable area that we had in SoC. As well they took away our ability to properly join a faction (or stay neutral), had some terrible gameplay decisions (e.g. enemies could shoot at you if they were outside the base but you could not return fire since you were inside), and a totally broken economy (being rich in two hours of play is contrary to the Stalker style as set out in SoC) and can be used to buy end-level gear from Nimble at the first base, results in me giving CoP a 3 / 5 even though it has better graphics.
So while the series is getting closer to their roots, the complete lack of the features that made SoC so wonderful, and the apparent inability of the GSC management to understand what those features are, makes me very skeptical of Stalker 2. This will definitely be one to keep an eye on, and possibly rent, but only after I get at least a 4 / 5 from X-Play.
Most probably do not know that the two geniuses behind the atmosphere in SoC, quit GSC just before SoC launched. They started their own company in the Ukraine (where GSC is as well), called 4A (no relation). Their first game was Metro 2033 which scored 5 / 5 for atmosphere (by most reviewers) but significantly lower for gameplay.
So unless GSC is finally going to realize that atmosphere is not just ambient music/sounds (which is the only thing in CoP that could be considered atmospheric), then this series is destined to be just another generic shooter with (some) good graphics, but little else.
I am also hopeful that the upcoming Metro: Last Light (due out in 2012) will correct the purely linear gameplay and add some of the other aspects that made SoC so good (artifacts, more than one brief anomaly, sneaking, sniping, trading, factions). After all, they are both based on the book "Roadside Picnic", and after doing some research when Metro 2033 was first released, it does not appear that either has licensed the rights to the book. That means they both have a right to 'interpret' all the concepts in the book, with neither being able to claim the other has trespassed on their domain. If they do correct some of these issues, then we might just have a new contender for our interest.
P.S. I gave Metro 2033 a 3 / 5. They advertised many aspects that were not in the game (e.g. ammo being plentiful and the forced interactions with objects was only in the tutorial and then at the very end) and the gameplay was too linear killing re-playability (except for a bored few). While atmospheric, it did not capitalize on that or offer any stealth which would have enhanced the thrilling sense of danger and the supposed need to conserve ammo. Glad I played, but not enough to do so again. Will look to the reviews of the next one though.

I've played both SoC and CoP and love them both. I prefer SoC because everyone is out to kill you, I love the dynamic scenery and the atmosphere. And that when you crawl into a dark cave/tunnel, you know that you aren't alone, now it becomes the waiting game to scare the crap outta ya when that snork comes barreling at ya. The game isn't anything remotely close to Fallout or any rpg that i've played. Its a great game and should definitely be played by everyone.
I really do hope that they fix the "pre-defined map render zones" mainly in SoC and a few times in CoP. And I really do hope they tweak the stealth factor system, was none in SoC and CoP wasn't the best. However, you learn to either dodge those render zones and run in guns blazing and you'll be fine as long as you care loads of medkits.
On one spectrum, I loved the game's difficulty settings in SoC, every time i popped up like a gopher, I got lit up. So you needed to plan a strategy or get the g36 (known as G37 ingame). I also do wish that there would be a feature to be able to tweak your gun. For example, you have a G37 and you want to make it into a real sniper like the sniper M4 found in Soc in the Army Warehouse.
If it is at all possible to tweak your guns with the gunsmiths with the proper tools to be able to do that, that'll be awesome (sniping time here i come ^_^), same goes with applying a artifact into the gun would be pretty neat.
On the other spectrum, I hated the game for a few reasons like the auto-save feature, there is none. You eventually became friends with that F6 button later on in the harder zones. But also there was no real good tutorial level to baby step you through the game. After 9 or deaths you learned that running in guns blazing with a mere pistol WILL NOT get you anywhere but 6 feet under real quick. And to always find cover even if that means to find a body as a human shield.
With that all said, the game is awesome and would love small tweaks, but its a solid game worth adding to your collection of pc games, because this is a pioneer game that'll pave the road to future RPG & FPS games down the road.

The atmosphere for SoC was amazing. the story was great, weapons were great, alittle buggy at times but that did not affect the overall product that gsc gameworld produced,.
hardrocker943
I played and beat SoC and it was fantastic. The atmosphere is top notch and it really does feel like you are in a survival scenario. Though the story was weak. The way it was told was just way to hard to follow and it took a lot of reading. But somehow it is still addicting and fun. But it is certainly a game that is a love it or hate it affair, as the game has a learning curve that is steeper than other.

Stephen and anyone else going to play the original Stalker, I recommend installing the STALKER Complete 2009 mod. Not only it improves the graphics but also improves some gameplay issues of the original.

"completely new multi-platform technology"
So they are developing it on consoles? While, I can understand as you get more sales, but most times when developers decides to create a console version of game that originally came on the PC, the PC version suffers because developers dumb it down the game. Hope that won't happen for the sequel.

Do NOT try Stalker or Stalker Clear Sky, Engine and gameplay is horrible.
But S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat was bloody awesome, i'm sure the next one will be even better!
shadowreaper819
They should bring Stalkers to the PS3 so people like me can finally play.
ImmortalKrogan
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games ae great, but flawed. I would HIGHLY recommend buy ing the games then downloading the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. complete mods with it to fix all of the problems.

Old news! But no. I've never played Stalker.
However, the fact that this is being spread around everywhere just makes me want to hop on the Bandwagon. -_-; I like knowing what everyone is talking about. Feels good to be in-the-loop.

Yes, the original and Call of Pripyat were that good. Probably best to stay away from Clear Sky as it's easily the weakest of the series. Stephen, if you tired of the same old Call of Duty-like shooters, I recommend trying Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat.
UnidentifiedFlyingTard
Yeah, I thought Clear Sky was just awful, at least Call of Pripyat kind of made up for it.
NortheastMonk
I didn't care for Clear Sky at all, but SoC was good.
UnidentifiedFlyingTard
Hell yes, Shadow of Chernobyl is one of the best games I have played, the atmosphere is just amazing.
